Clynelish celebrated its 200th anniversary last year. Well, that is to say… the original distillery was built in 1819, but is now known as Brora, of course, for in 1968 the new Clynelish was built. It’s of the current distillery that I was able to secure a sample of the new make spirit. And unless you’ve only just gotten to know me recently, you are likely aware that I have a soft spot for new make. This is one I had not yet tried before.

Ooh, yes. Sweet barely with a feisty edge, without becoming piquant. Lovely sweetness as if from young carrots that were cooked until they are mushy. Even a touch candy-like. Very clean on the nose, indeed!

The taste is a perfect continuation of the nose, but quite sturdy due to the high ABV. Having said that, you can already detect this is creamy. The typical waxiness of Clynelish is thus already there at birth and very pleasant. Yes, from the second sip forward it even becomes quite fatty. But so good.

The finish is very long and heartwarming.

Very cleane yet creamy new make. Top. Pity that this is not commercially available, for it would make for a mighty cocktail this summer.
