It's been a while since I tried the official 14yo Clynelish, one which I've always thought of as a bit of a cult favourite. I remember an exceptionally dry briney malt from the last time I tried any, (2 years ago).

This one however seems to impart bananas on the nose initially. Not what I was expecting, but pleasant all the same. 2nd nosing however picks out more of the briney character I expected. And with the third go it really does have a mouth-watering strong sea salt and mineral edge. Kettle Chips! A sweeter edge is just apparent after a bit of breathing. Nice complexity.

Palate-wise this is a bit sweeter than I remember the 14yo to be. The wonderful dry saltiness is there in abundance, tempered with a sweet soft fruity edge - almost toffee like. How can I say this - it's like a Laphroaig minus the peat but with added banana-toffee, (does that make sense?)

The finish is as expected - drier than a Chablis, and very briney.

I think I need to explore the world of Clynelish more - I just love this one.

Been my favourite distillery for quite a few years now, consistently good quality whisky and always lots of indie casks to choose from. The 1997 vintages are a good place to start, just ordered one from TWE this morning - 1997 by Adelphi who in my opinion bottle a lot of the best casks around. 1989 is another great vintage, not as much available and a bit more expensive but worth seeking out - there is currently some available again by Adelphi which is superb.Personally I would give the sherry matured versions a miss as it suits bourbon maturation a lot better

Nice review and also thx for the suggestions @kian. I am getting a sample of the Adelphi 1997 soon - I am really looking forward to try it :)

Probably will be ordering a few bottles from Whisky Exchange in a month or so myself - I think this Adelphi bottle may be at the top of the list now.
