It's been a while since I tried the official 14yo Clynelish, one which I've always thought of as a bit of a cult favourite. I remember an exceptionally dry briney malt from the last time I tried any, (2 years ago).
This one however seems to impart bananas on the nose initially. Not what I was expecting, but pleasant all the same. 2nd nosing however picks out more of the briney character I expected. And with the third go it really does have a mouth-watering strong sea salt and mineral edge. Kettle Chips! A sweeter edge is just apparent after a bit of breathing. Nice complexity.
Palate-wise this is a bit sweeter than I remember the 14yo to be. The wonderful dry saltiness is there in abundance, tempered with a sweet soft fruity edge - almost toffee like. How can I say this - it's like a Laphroaig minus the peat but with added banana-toffee, (does that make sense?)
The finish is as expected - drier than a Chablis, and very briney.
I think I need to explore the world of Clynelish more - I just love this one.
