The Dalmore Vintage 2000 is a new release from this Highland distillery, on the market since 2010. It’s about 10 years old and has a nice dark colour, despite being from a bourbon cask. Ah, the magic of E150a, no?

The nose is very sweet on oranges, pear and apple. A large jar of honey and a handful of pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Vanilla (and not just a bit too), cashew nuts, sweet tobacco and chicory. Apricots and sweet chestnut. Leave it for a while and you’ll get a truckload of caramel.

On the palate, it’s very creamy and fruity. The ABV is a big plus. Apricots, tobacco, ginger. Exotic and appealing. Very spicy with ginger in the lead. Feisty.

The finish goes sherry with figs and dades, on a bitter bottom of chicory.

I gave this bottle to my friend Niek for his birthday. The first thing I said after ‘congratulations, here is your gift’ was ‘Can I have a sample, please?’. Shaming, really. I know. But that’s what friends are for, no?
