This 13 Year Old appeared in the Natural Cask Strength series, the Edradour in those wonderful decanters. It matured for 13 years on a sherrycask and was bottled at cask strength. Wonderful dark color.

The nose is very grassy and sweet at the same time. Some silex, struck match and leather. Dark berries and organic chocolate. But also gooseberries, making it sweet and sour at the same time. Marzipan joins the fray. Clementines for a good bitterness. I am very pleasantly surprised. Add a teaspoon of water and it becomes positively great! Admit it, you did not see this coming. Fresh figs, raisins, caramelized oranges.

Creamy and sweet on the palate. Very spicy. Chili peppers, cloves, liquorice. The fruit returns. Dark fruits, dried fruits, typical sherry notes. But fairly hot. Adding water offers fruit tea, leather and something green that reminds me off grass, but not quite. Not your typical sherry cask, I would say. But it sure works!

Warm, fruity finish, even diluted. Say what? With water it lasts even longer.

Very, very good Edradour that defies the reputation of the brand and brings it up a notch or two. Thanks, Michiel & Mireille.
