In another era Edradour was sometimes ridiculed as Edrasour, but since Andrew Symington and his team took over, this little distillery in Pitlochry is going from strength to strength. The people of van Wees in Holland noticed this too and have released a whole range of single casks. This week I’m putting no less than 6 casks head-to-head. This is an 8 years old from 2008, a single sherry butt at 60.4% ABV! It stands out for two reasons: the lightest in color and the heaviest in alcohol. Oh, by the way, this was already bottled in 2016 and can actually still be found for around 63 EUR.

Surprisingly soft, nicely sweet nose on all kinds of fruit: blackberries, litchis, oranges, gooseberries and sultanas. Somewhat musty and green on parsley and thyme. Fruit tea that was left unattended. You know what? It works! This nose is simply delicious!

Good body, almost syrupy and… hurray: it does not burn! You can simply enjoy this without water, meaning the alcohol – that you certainly feel – is finely integrated. Typical sherry influences like sultanas, orange marmalade and nutmeg, but a lot more fresh that its darker brothers from the first fill sherry butts.

The finish is very long, slightly bitter, mildly drying, mostly sweet. Nice balance.

Great Edradour! This might be a refill oloroso cask making it so bright and accessible. I confess, it’s my favourite of this head-to-head session.
