The Dutch bottler van Wees released a whole series of single casks of Edradour in 2020, all of them at cask strength. Let’s put these head-to-head. This is a 9 years old from 2010, a single 1st fill sherry butt, at a strength of 58.6%! It has the color of cola!
Very intense and deeply sherried nose with all you might expect from a first fill sherry cask: raisins, dates, cherries, cola bottles (the candy, obviously) and walnuts. Some spices on the side: nutmeg and vanilla. Some furniture of silver polish, but not disturbing in the least. Au contraire. This is yet another excellent nose.
The body is fine and the alcohol perfectly integrated. No bite and thus no water needed to enjoy. Dark and sweet fruit like raisins and figs precede the spices. Again nutmeg and vanilla, but also a truckload of cloves.
It turns somewhat piquant in the finish, but it’s far too late to crash this party.
A veritable sherry bomb, so if this is a style you like you should go for it. Finding it will be another story though. Its reputation preceded it, making it sell out very quickly. Initially 125 EUR, but by now double that in some places…
