The Dutch bottler van Wees released a whole series of single casks of Edradour in 2020, all of them at cask strength. Let’s put these head-to-head. This is a 9 years old from 2011, a single 1st fill sherry butt, at a strength of 58.5%! It has the color of cola! That undoubtedly means a very active cask.

Lovely, very sweet nose on rhubarb marmalade and blueberries, a clear hint of origin chocolate and hazelnuts. Simply outstanding.

Sweet & sour on the palate, as if I’ve mixed cherries and oranges in a smoothie, seasoned with some black pepper and nutmeg. It works like a charm and the malt doesn’t burn, meaning the alcohol is well integrated and can be enjoyed without water. Justly slightly piquant.

Long and mildly drying finish. Mocha at the death.

The nuances between the casks are clear, making this a fun exercise indeed.
