The Dutch bottler van Wees released a whole series of single casks of Edradour in 2020, all of them at cask strength. Let’s put these head-to-head. This is a 9 years old from 2011, a single 1st fill sherry butt, at a strength of 57.1%!

Another dark & sweet nose, but in this case the emphasis is not so much on spices or dark fruit, but more on candied syrup. This can be put on pancakes! It also shows some candy-like traits with a nice hint of chocolate. This is a very sweet Edradour, without the typical sour note. Nice!

The body is somewhat light, but it’s bull’s eye on the palate: dark and sweet fruit like raisins and plums with some candied syrup and a pinch of black pepper. Eminently quaffable without water, because it never turns either sharp or piquant. Good!

The long finish is its forte. Dried plums and dates with some cloves. It remains juicy for the longest time, only to turn dry at the very death.

This is great stuff. Many people think these modern Edradour are somewhat over the top, but I am very fond of this style. Can still be found for some 80 EUR. That’s a very fair price for this gem.
