Re Lost in Translation. my brother, who is not a whisky lover, made a trip to Tokyo and as a tribute to "Lost in Translation" drank a Hibiki 17 in the hotel bar used in that film. Even better, he bought me a bottle for my birthday. Considering he doesn't like the stuff, he has excellent taste - for Christmas he got me an Ichiru 2016 Peated. He lives in Singapore and has a friend with contacts who supposedly got it early and relatively cheap.

@bigmoose - Awesome! Sounds like a good brother - mine would buy me JD no.7 and then attempt to Jedi mind trick me into believing it's the best whisky in the world smile

Was gifted a bottle of Hibiki 12 a few years back and thought it was excellent - can only imagine the 17 being even more excellenter . . .

The Hibiki 17 was much appreciated; it was when it was getting pricier but had not yet become utterly unaffordable / unobtainable. But it was the gift of the Ichiru that absolutely stunned me. The year before, my brother had mentioned that his whiskey-loving colleague had made a big deal about treating him to a very rare Japanese whisky. I pieced together from his account that is was probably one of the "Playing Cards" malts and told him the history of those whiskies (liberation in the face of bulldozers etc) and how privileged he had been - that I would probably never get to sample one. I guess my information must have stuck, since he made the effort to get me a bottle of its spiritual successor!

My favourite movie scene featuring whisky doesn't have a specific whisky in it.

It's the bloody scene from 'Inglorious Basterds' with Michael Fassbender and Diane Kruger where they drink 'a forty year old from the Scottish Highlands'

'Oh I must say.....damn fine stuff sir'

In the excellent TV series, Rescue Me, Denis Leary quaffed plenty of Irish whiskey; Jameson's I think.

I was watching the first two episodes of season 2 of the good place and Ted Danson's character is drinking Glenfiddich 21 in a moment of weakness.

I'm not big on American sitcoms but this one is so well put together, smart and funny.

No clip link I can locate online. There is a funny scene in Fraser where Ros "really needs a drink" and she pour herself a tall glass of Glenfarclas 25 YO, she starts gulping it and Fraser tells her to take it easy. She agrees and pours it down the sink, he wails "Nooo, not the Glenfarclas 25, couldn't you have taken the 12?"

Not a film but the author Laird Barron mentions whisky quite a lot in his books with Wild Turkey, Glenlivet and Laphroiag (on several occasions) get mentioned.

A TV show I quite like, The Walking Dead, has had lots of whisky scenes. I seem to remember an old Balvenie and some French whisky at one point but this is one of my fave scenes. Not sure about the juice - looks like bourbon but can't tell what exactly?

@RianC that's my average Friday night - whisk(e)y and metal, just without the walkers.

One of Merle's best scenes.

@Frost - ha! Something about bourbon and rock music isn't there?!

He was a great character and well acted. Shame he's no longer around.

Billions on Showtime has done some blatant whiskey product placement, JW Blue, Oban 14, and most recently Michter’s Bourbon.

Film from 1964 "Americanization of Emily", starring James Garner, Julie Andrews, and James Colburn. The opening scenes show cases of Jim Bean, I. W. Harper, White Horse, and assorted cases of French Cognac. These old films which show, old brands always, leave me wondering how the spirits tasted. The closest I will ever get to experience old distillation taste, was an old Crown Royal with a tax stamp from 1967, which I drank in haste during my wasted youth, without appreciation.

What's wrong with Secretary Kim?

I have seen whisky in other Korean dramas, including appearances by Balvenie and Glenfiddich, but this was the first time I was a scene in which it was not in a tumbler with ice (or in a shot glass or being drunk from the bottle).

This time, 2 of the main characters were pouring a dark looking whisky into none other than.....GLENCAIRN GLASSES!

And no ice. Finally, a drama after my whisky heart.

If only I could have identified the Scotch...If anyone wants to try, it was episode 4, I think.

The whisky issued as government rations in the 1946 film "Whisky Galore" is Johnnie Walker - ironic.

I spent part of the day watching "Giant", starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Dennis Hooper. I've seen this movie a few times but, never realised how many times Old Grand Dad bourbon shows up in multiple scenes. Now, I'm tempted to give buy a bottle and give it taste.

Not a film but I travelled by train the other day and forgot my kindle so brought a book from the newsagents. I decided on an Irvine Welsh book called 'A decent ride'. I love Irvine Welsh books and the fact they're written in Scottish slang means I think I can communicate in Edinburgh lingo. I'll be calling people 'radges' and saying 'barry'' and 'git tae fuck' for weeks.

Any way there's a scene in the book where one of the characters a rich American is drinking whisky in a hotel. Highland Park 18 and then when we phones down to room service for the most expensive whisky they have gets a bottle of Macallan 1954 at £2'000 a bottle and a Highland Park 1958 at £1'100.

I obviously didn't finish the book on the train and am having to hide it in my sock draw while I finish it to avoid questions from my kids along the lines of 'Dad, what does ''a decent ride" mean?'

This is a TV show and not a film, but I figured close enough. Plus, it amused me and I suspect it may amuse you, too.

I was watching Star Trek: Discovery (season 1, episode 6) the other night, and there's a scene where Captain Lorca and Admiral Cornwell sit down for some whisky, and I couldn't help but notice a familiar sight. The bottle isn't shown for very long, so I'm pretty pleased with myself for having caught it, but once the Captain pulled it out of his desk I exclaimed to my wife: Highwood Ninety!

I won't tell you how long I was going frame-by-frame in order to capture these screenshots, but it was more time than I probably should've spent on it. I just really wanted to see the label. For the curious, the name is "Wee Bairns" which apparently is an "Interstellar Import." There's also a quote on there: "Now, there's a drink for a man." I can't make out what it says under the name... it's just too blurry and dark.

The show is shot in Toronto, so I'm imagining some prop person just walking down to the nearest LCBO and picking out the most futuristic whisky bottle they could find. :)
