This old bottling was released especially for Dewit Wines from Belgium, now already a decade ago. The funny thing is, you can still get it at the shop, albeit for around 90 EUR. What does that tell us? Bad whisky? Bad marketing? Who can tell? I do wonder what a plain hogshead is, though. Virgin oak?
The nose shows promise with sweets that remind me of old grain whisky. Some white and yellow fruit like melon and sultanas, but mostly something that smells like varnish or even rubber. The good rubber, mind you, no sulphur. Loads of flowers. A field full of wild flowers. Heather honey. All in all, this works rather well, making it a pleasant and somewhat complex nose.
Silky soft at the attack, but then turns very spicy. Tannins, liquorice, ginger, cloves, white pepper. That must be the ABV too. Then turns creamy and fruity. The sweetness kicks in. The oak offers a light, drying bitterness.
Short, but warm and sharp finish with the emphasis on the tannins and a bit of woodsmoke.
Well, I suppose it must be the hefty price tag that keeps this one from selling out. For it is a fine dram!
