The advantage of your friends knowing that you have a soft spot for new make is the fact that they will score you some when they visit a distillery. That is how I got this sample of Glenfarclas new make from Jan VC, my lunch and whisky buddy. Thanks, Jan! The sample has already been cut to the industry standard of 63,5%, the strength at which it is normally put in the cask.

The nose is immediately creamy and spicy, as well as sweet from white fruit with even a hint of green banana. Underneath is a sour lining that reminds me of berries and rhubarb. Even something a little umami. Cooked ham with mustard? No, that is taking it a little too far.

It is very powerful on the palate, of course, but now mostly sweet. Very spicy from the start. Floral too. Violets, which I get in almost any new make. Pepper and cloves already. Clean and nice!

The finish is very long and warming.

Again a great spirit without any kind of off note. This makes me happy.
