The bottlings by the Creative Whisky Company are divided into three exclusive series, the Exclusive Malts (single cask, cask strength, not finished), Exclusive Range (single cask at 45%) and Exclusive Casks (single cask, cask strength, finished on a second cask). Deze Glengoyne 1972 Exclusive Cask, at the respectabel age of 37, was finished on Fresh American Oak.

The first whiff is sweet and sour at the same time. The sour dissipates as quickly as it emerges, though. Besides the sweet touches of oranges, vanilla and cinnamon, there is one big surprise: bubblegum! Contrary to previous encounters with this aroma, it doesn’t really hurt in this case (yet).

It rolls over the tongue introducing the sweet bubblegum to the palate, accompanied by some soft spices. However… after only a few seconds it starts falling apart. It’s simply not enjoyable for some reason that I cannot put my finger on. The sourness returns a little, obliterating the oranges and vanilla.

The finish, which is rather short, is a battle for supremacy between sour and sweet.

At the end of the dram, you are left with the idea that you’ve just finished a bag of rubbery candy. Surely that’s not the plan? I expected more from a 37-year old whisky. Pity.
