I taste this whisky on the 28th December 2018. So what? Well, remember that the first spirit came out of the stills at Glenrothes on 28th December 1879, so exactly 139 years ago to the day. Anyway. This is a release by Gordon & Macphail for The Whisky Mercenary, a Belgian bottler. Jürgen knows how to select his casks, so I know I’ll enjoy this.

The nose is quite herbal, almost vegetal. All kinds of green notes as if from plans, ferns and bushes, upholstered with a somewhat bittersweet note in the guise of gooseberries, white berries and the skin of a young pear. Hint of coconut. Somewhat unexpectedly ‘un-sweet’, if you know what I mean. But fresh as spring.

It is wonderfully round and creamy on the palate. Almost syrupy. The bittersweet note gets an added touch of sour as if from grapefruit. Pretty peppery. Milk chocolate appears midpalate. The coconut does an encore.

The finish is medium long, warm and now even leans towards tropical fruit.

Nice but rather atypical Glenrothes. I was especially fond of the finish. I feel the price of 75 EUR is reasonable, but by now this bottle hard to come by.
