It is not often that you encounter a Glenrothes of 25 years old. That is why Douglas Laing decided to release this in their XOP range, which means Extra Old Particular. It was bottled at cask strength and has a beautiful copper color.

The nose is rife with candied fruit – citrus in the lead – caramel and butterscotch. A hint of a struck match is quickly replaced with a deep sweetness like molasses. A pinch of cardemom and a hint of marzipan. I like it.

The arrival is very powerful and spicy. This comes as no surprise with an ABV of almost 57%. The fruit can be described best as a mix of grapefruit and lemon, supported with some red berries. The marzipan returns, albeit in the background.

It has a very long and spicy finish.

Lovely Glenrothes, but it will set you back some 325 EUR.
