Glenturret is not exactly a well-known malt, even though you can easily get it. But when I say Famous Grouse, that will surely ring a bell. This famous blend has its home base at Glenturret. When you visit the distillery, be sure to take part in the Famous Grouse Experience. In the meantime, allow me to tell you about the official 10 Year Old (albeit a bottling from a decade ago), which become the successor of the 12 Year Old (which we will try next).
While the nose is rather light, it is also quite expressive. Green apples, gooseberries and fresh melon precede a (albeit very docile) hint of spices. A touch of mint, some marzipan and honey. All very fresh and quite pleasant.
It is surprisingly creamy, but immediately bittersweet. Sweet from the fruit, but with a bitterness as if from green tea, undoubtedly induced by the wood. This fades a bit with the second sip to allow more room for the sweet notes. Honey and vanilla, but also lime and barley sugar. It works like a charm, but it is not a ‘difficult’ malt at all.
The finish is short, starts very sweet to die a very dry death because of the oak.
Fine spring whisky, no more, no less. But I can imagine that some people will find this a tad to dry.
