Gordon & Macphail has a series of cask strength whiskies, aptly labeled CASK, where this Highland Park found lodging with its 56,9% ABV. It is a vatting of three sister casks. We are trying this one as the last in our little line-up of 12 Year Old Highland Parks.
The nose is soft and sweet on vanilla and honey with quite some grassy notes. Think hay on the one hand and a walk in the woods, after a shower, on the other hand. Pretty fruity, primarily European white fruit like apples and pears, but also a touch of citrus and, of course, the obligatory heather. Sweet smoke rounds out this wonderful nose.
Very creamy on the palate. Again a lot of fruit (the white fruit gets citrusy company, mandarin I would say) and feisty on pepper and cinnamon. The oak brings in a slight bitter touch, giving this HP a wonderful balance.
The finish is long and very lively, warming and fruity until the very end.
This is a very good Highland Park, absolutely devoid of the need for water. A gem.
