I am putting two Highland Park from 1998 head-to-head. Both were bottled for the Belgian market. On the one hand there is the Smoking Buffalo 2nd Edition, on the other there is this 14 Year Old for a local whisky club named Single Malt Waasland.
The nose is as good as identical to that one of the Smoking Buffalo, with hints of red fruit and a great smokiness, however subtle. It is just a tad sweeter and the white chocolate turns into Galak. Remember that one? With the roasted rice? Wonderful.
On the palate, too, it is clearly a sibling of the Smoking Buffalo, but this one does have a Sharp edge and a wonderful salty touch to it.
The finish is medium long, nicely smoky, spicy and warming.
Both HPs are clearly related. The cask numbers fuel the assumption that they matured close to each other, which would explain their similarity a bit. Whatever the case, they are both great HPs.
