My soft spot for new make is a public secret by now. I get a bit giddy like a kid when I get hold of a sample of new make, especially if it is a new make that is not commercially available. But some distilleries have (or had) their new make on the market, like this New Make Spirit Drink by Highland Park. It was cut to 50% and for sale in half bottles, but is no longer being sold.

The nose is surprisingly sweet and even a bit candy-like, but dry. Think violets and hard candy with strawberry taste. Some sweet butter and even some juicy pears. It also offers some hazel nuts and… blood. Wonderful trace of smoke. Very pleasant new make on the nose.

The ABV is no problem whatsoever. Au contraire, it gives him a nice punch. Again candy sweet and smoky, but now with a mild herbal side. Pepper, aniseed, raw potatoes and some milk chocolate.

The finish is medium long, self-assured and spicy. Some copper at the death (which is kind of funny, considering the fact that copper is the only thing that has touched this spirit so far…).

Lovely spirit. Pity that it has been discontinued.
