the 2014 world cup starts today and 32 nations have the chance at glory. what would you open to celebrate if your team wins?

if portugal can win it all, i plan on opening my 1972 39y/o glendronach. nothing would make me happier, and i'd love to share my joy with as many people as possible....

I'd open a can of worms, because my team is buried so deep it may not see the proper side of the turf in this lifetime - Oh Canada ;-(

Argentina = Macallan Cask Strength

I don't really have a team, but I like Korean food so I bought a Korean flag. If the KOR wins, frankly, I don't have a malt that I identify with the country. I suppose I could do soju shots.

Yesterday I met with a Korean nurse I used to work with. She was looking to buy a scotch and I suggested Aberlour A'Bunadh. She bought it. So Maybe what I'll do is mix 1part AA and 2 parts soju and see what happens.

@Nozinan If your nurse friend is a new Scotch drinker, the AA is some pretty hard stuff to start a rookie on. If she is a veteran like you and me, no problem. No offence intended, mate, but 60% not handled properly could put someone off forever.

Back to the question. If England wins (highly unlikely) I might have a couple of double martinis made with the Bruichladich Botanist gin that's been languishing in the freezer for about a year.

Glad to hear it @Nozinan. Now that you mention AA, if my team wins I might have the last dram of my batch#20 that I put into a miniature bottle about 2 years ago.

If Germany wins I will drink an old faithful dram I reserve for special occasions, Talisker 18 yr. A few upsets this tourney so far. I hope to see England play Germany this year, just to get the family rivalry going again.

@Lars - Perhaps it will be GER vs ARG. Should we arrange a friendly wager or perhaps exchange samples of Talisker 18 and Macallan Cask Strength if the two teams meet?

@paddockjudge

@Lars you are one win away from Talisker 18 YO. I have already opened my Macallan Cask Strength as we did a Macallan flight Saturday, and a few more. Are you up for a gentleman's agreement if Argentina and Germany meet in the final?

@paddockjudge, I am still riding that high from the game yesterday, driving home from work I hear 5-0 half time for Germany, WTF, it's suppose to be a close game? Even the Oddsmakers were saying 50-50. I finished my last open bottle but have a fresh one in reserve.
Sure I'm up for a gentleman's agreement if Argentina and Germany meet. Let me know, msg me.

@Lars looks like u have a better than average chance of enjoying some Talisker. Germany have been crushing all tourny barring the Ghana game.

Hockey and ice-cold beer are common place in Canada; however, the boys from Winnipeg and Sudbury not only share a passion for fine whisky, but also share the ability to correctly predict a side for the final pairing of FIFA 2014 championship final. Well done Lars.

  • To the victor go the spoils.

At stake for Germany and Argentina is the opportunity to seize the throne of world football supremacy, but more importantly, @Lars and @paddockjudge have committed themselves to partaking of some very fine world class malts - Talisker 18 Yo and Macallan Cask Strength 60.1% abv.

A gentleman's agreement is currently being finalized and will surely involve the exchange of world class malts.

I expect great things from Canada in 2-3 world cups from now with all the talent that is emerging I believe we can be a force to be reckoned with.

As well the USA should be proud of there performance that was a extremely rough group to get out of.

Cheers

@Jonesz Yes, it was great fun. Now that you mention it, I should have taken Argentina underneath on a large exotic ticket...I wonder what the Ger - Arg exacta paid? To the victor go the spoils, and I hope to spoil @Lars with some good Canadian juice....and the Mac Cask Strength.

What do I buy if Brazil wins? Cachaça? What about if Portugal wins (a nice bottle of Port perhaps) ? Those are the teams I’m cheering for. And before anyone asks, there is no real rhyme or reason to my choice of teams. flag_br flag_pt

@Lars, England has a strong side, it wouldn't be a surprise if they ran the table. Uruguay is always surprising, I love watching them. I don't have a favourite this time around, but I've been following Mexico and Portugal (and Argentina, early exit?) since the 2007 FIFA U20 in Toronto.

@Lars - Being English, England, obviously! relaxed That said, expectations are unusually low and I think that is helping a young team. We look good attacking but not convincing at the back. Belgium will show us how they can handle a more dangerous opponent.

I had Germany or Spain as favourites; the former are showing they know how to progress in tournaments (it gets really boring you know ha ha!) . Spain have been the best side for me without hitting anywhere near top gear. Brazil don't look that great really but like Germany, you can never rule them out.

I think England, Croatia, Belgium and France all have good outside chances.

If England win . . . na not biting or even contemplating that. The scars run too deep . . .

@OdysseusUnbound I will not be spending any hard earned gift card dollars at the LCBO on Cachaca. One of the case managers I work with is from Brazil and she goes back every year and said she will bring me back some of the good stuff.

If England wins I will wash down a steak and ale pie with several pints of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord Ale. If Mexico wins it will be fish tacos and Pacificos. If Belgium wins I’ll have @marcjedi1 send me some Mark and Manny’s Malt and some good Belgian chocolate. Too bad Scotland’s not there; it would be smoked haddock and Ardbeg Renaissance.
