This single barrel is 19-04135, from rick R-16 and was bottled on June 18 2019.

The colour is a dark amber. On the nose we have massive layers of oak, featuring dark chocolate, nougat and cinnamon, as well as usual suspects in JD (black liquorice, malt and pepper). Wisps of wood smoke. Terrific nose, though water only seems to lessen the experience.

On the palate the wood continues to dominate, though the cinnamon and pepper relax a bit. More caramel and vanilla. Unlike its effect on the nose, water amps things up with more oiliness and bigger spices. Like the Legacy Edition, the palate has less oomph than the nose, but is no less complex.

The finish is long with more dark chocolate, bovril, brine and just a hint of vanilla. The saltiness is odd - not a note I usually get with Jack - but it works just fine. Compared with the JD Legacy Edition, it's oakier, fuller bodied, oilier and overall a much richer experience. Now for our final Tennessean, which I suspect is from a different distillery altogether...

Nice thoughts on this. It's funny you reviewed this back to back with the Legacy Edition (which I just polished a bottle off!) I find the Legacy Edition to have the same problem as the standard Old No. 7...over promising on the nose, and under delivering on the palate. That being said, I really, really love the nose! I'm debating buying the single barrel based on these attributes...would you recommend it? Did you like it enough to buy it again?

JD Single Barrels vary quite widely - they are single barrels after all, and given the temperatures the profile of barrels higher up in the rickhouse can be very different from those at the bottom. I've done a number of them side-by-side and they can go from light and fruity to massive, unbearable oak. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.

@dloewen listen to @talexander. He knows. Batch variation is HUGE in many whiskies. If you like your bottle of JD SB, don't assume that the next one you buy will taste the same way.
