A Laffie from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, matured on a refill sherry butt. But a very active butt, judging from the colour. Hmm, that did not come out right, did it? Replace butt with cask in the second sentence, please. It was labelled Cowboy’s campfire dram. The ABV is amazing.
Grand nose! Dried figs and fresh dades wrapped in bacon, blood oranges, a light stable scent and some medicinal aromas with band-aids in the lead, followed by mercurochrome. Olive oil and stockfish. Like I said: grand nose.
The attack is powerful and spicy, with an immediate burst of sweet and dark fruits, coated in demerara sugar and enveloped with wonderful smokiness and peat. On the edge of sulphur. Bitter coffee beans. Iondine. Salt and chili peppers.
The finish is long and sweet with a very smoky terminus.
In one word: superb! Reminds me of that other great Laffroaig 1998 by A.D. Rattray. Around 82 EUR for members. Thanks to Sjoerd for the sample.
