Gordon & Macphail, the well known bottler from Elgin, released this 9 Year Old Macallan under their Speymalt banner, an obvious reference to the region of production. It is matured on a sherry cask, wich Macallan used to do exclusively until they turned to bourbon casks about two decates ago for their Fine Oak series.
Well, this is very good on the nose. Dry sherry with loads of ginger and marzipan. Gingerbread! Farmer butter. Grass, too. Hints of honey and caramelized Apple.
It is very oily and mouth coating. Sweet malt, roasted nuts, more honey than on the nose and a slight bitterness from black tea. Orange marmalade. Pancakes with maple syrup.
The finish is surprisingly short and slightly bitter.
This Macallan is not a champ, but a lot better than the Travel Series.
