A friend of mine gifted me both the 1966 and the 1974 Speymalts from Gordon & Macphail as a wedding present out of the 3 Speymalts that he had. As we both live in different countries, I took pity on him and decided to split the bottles so that we both could enjoy the vintages from other sides of the world. Our first tasting was actually in July over in Canada. These are our notes.

Undiluted

Nose: Slightly spicy with hints of orange peel, honey and strong sherrywood overtones. A faint trace of smokiness.

Body: Deliciously rich and slightly spicy with sweet sherry and nuts. Peaty and smoky but incredibly well rounded.

Finish: lasting warm sherry and peat giving you a feeling that you just drank a very well aged king of its class.

Overall Impression: A classic. Being a gift made it all that much better, this is a wonderful old whisky that brings warmth and certainly compliments any cabinet. Well balanced Sherry dram.

A 92 from me
