Let me start by saying that I have only had one Mortlach so far, from Cooper’s Choice 1978. That one did not please me one bit. So I am curious how this young bottling from Maltman will fare.

The nose is not bad at all. I get some white fruit and peach, nicely sweet with cinnamon. Nuts, too. Almonds, I would say. Coffee beans, even. Some mint, which provides some lift. A trace of smoke makes this very nice indeed. A good start.

It is light on the tongue and pretty soft at first. Very sweet. It builds up nicely, though. A tropical fruity smoothie with espresso and whipped cream. Sounds like a weird combination, but it works for me. Midpalate, the spices emerge: pepper and cloves. Again that smoky edge, that is more prominent on the palate than it was on the nose.

The medium to long finish remains smoky sweet.

Well, I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised. Around 45 EUR.
