The German C&S Dram Collection is the brainchild of Andrea Caminneci. I will be putting two Mortlach he selected head to head: this 14 Year Old from 1998 (bottled in 2013) against a 16 Year Old from 1995 (bottled in 2011). The cask numbers are 3805 and 3398 respectively. A little H2H experiment. The difference in color is huge. Let’s start with the Morlach from 1998, which is very pale.

The nose is a nice mix of vanilla, white chocolate, almond shavings and fresh coconut with a hint of woodsmoke in the background. Some honey. But the typical umami touch is conspicuously absent.

Nice mouth feel. Creamy and spicy on white pepper and candied ginger. Pretty sweet on apples and crystal sugar, joined by dried apricots and coconut. Vanilla and more ginger. The woodsmoke becomes bigger than the nose let on and that is pleasant.

Aromatic finish on almonds, sugars and notes of oak.

Pleasant, summery Mortlach with a feisty peppery note.
