This Mortlach was distilled in November 1995 and matured on a first fill sherry butt. It was bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, a club that aims to bottle only exceptionale good (their words, not mine) single casks at cask strength.
Again a somewhat weird nose, I must say. Loads of earth, new leather and something sourish that overpower the fruit, that is composed of baked apples and apricot jelly. A bit of choclate too. Stuck matches! Woodspice. I am not too fond of this.
Wonderfully creamy and full with loads of sweetness up front (toffee, oranges liqueur, mirabelles), but again the earth theme is revealed prominently. Dirty egde.
The finish is long, spicy and remains sweet.
Reminds me of a crossover between Bénédictine and Cointreau, but with a handful of mud thrown in. Not really my cup of malt.
