This Morlach was released by Carn Mor under their Strictly Limited banner and is a vatting of two bourbon hogsheads, which resulted in a whopping 652 bottles at drinking strength. I previously tasted a 16 Year Old Mortlach – from 1996 – in the same series during a fun chocolate & whisky pairing. I wonder if this Mortlach will be as grassy as I remember the previous one being.
The nose is very fresh and quite fruity. Gooseberries, young apples, hints of lime. Pretty herbal. Freshly cut grass, floral elements as well. Some marzipan, but in the back. Seville oranges appear after a few moments, as does some woodsmoke. Not bad, but not earth shattering either.
It is quite light bodied, but immediately very sweet. Some vanilla, apples, gooseberries and marzipan – so a fine continuation of the nose. The woodsmoke is louder, making this a pretty spicy whisky. Quite punchy, in fact.
The finish is medium long and sweet.
Fairly simple Mortlach, that can act perfectly as an aperitif. Around 55 EUR, which I find to be very friendly priced.
