It had been a very long time since I had tasted this classic. And I found out that I had not even written about it so far. Well, time to correct that. This Mortlach appeared on the market for the very first time in 1986, but my bottle dates back from 2012, the final year in which this one was produced, before Mortlach decided to overhaul the core range.

Lovely, elegant and very sweet nose – much sweeter than the current version. Overripe banana, a truckload of candied syrup, orange marmalade, apricots and toffee apples with some chocolate and earthy notes in the background. It also has a slight bitter note. Very refined.

It could have done with a bit more body, but the taste is nicely dark & sweet on apricot pastry, blood oranges, grapefruit, dates and fresh fig with a hint of Darjeeling tea that was left unattended. Midpalate it turns a bit dry, as if I’ve bitten on a grape’s pith.

The finish is very long, mildly drying and soft on spices.

A complex classic, which is very hard to find now.
