Gordon & Macphail hardly needs an introduction, right? They became world famous when the launched the Mortlach 70 Year Old a few years back, the oldest single malt ever to be bottled. This licensed bottling has a little more modest age, 22 years old, bottled at 40% ABV. It is a bottling from the ‘70s, very dark implying a sherry cask.

The nose shows a nice sherry influence with warm caramel, rich spices, gingerbread, candied syrup and even some roasted coffee beans. Inviting!

The body is light, the taste honeysweet and spicy. Again, the sherry is very prominent. Black pepper, ginger and a nice smokiness. Dades, Christmas cake and dried figs. Slightly drying.

The finish is even more drying, with again that attractive trace of smoke.

What a beautiful Mortlach! Very pleasantly surprised.
