Nikka’s Kingsland blend was launched in 1974 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company. These tasting notes were compiled from a 50ml sample that I bought at a mom and pop store in Japan.

The nose is full of alcohol! Wasn’t this bottled at 43%? I find it challenging to get past this wall of alcohol and let the whisky breathe a while. Afterwards there are lovely hints of apple as well as distinct malty and grainy elements. Smoke is lurking in the background.

The palate is surprisingly spicy throughout, interspersed with honey and sugary jelly beans.

The finish is quite short, sweet and dry.

This is not Nikka’s best blend, to say the least. While the nose is quite lovely if you let it breathe a bit, both palate and finish are not very interesting. I would have expected more from a commemorative expression.
