My journey into Japanese blends continues. This time a premium blended whisky from Nikka. This blend has been around since 1962. The bottle stands out on the shelf with a long thin neck from a plump oval shaped bottle.

Nose: straw, green apples, toffee

Taste: vanilla, grain whisky, bran, cereals, toffee apples

Finish: gentle all spice, cinnamon, black peppers, cloves. Reminds of a gentler finish of Chivas Regal 12yr.

This whisky is seriously smooth – a deluxe mixer. Grain dominates the nose and taste with malt on the after taste. I'm in Japan and highballs are a part of whisky drinking. This is a blend and it's what it's made for – so no harm in trying. So I try this whisky as a highball, and it’s really a great match.

Bonus points for selling a blend at 43%.

@Frost, thanks again for giving us reviews of seldom-reviewed whiskies. It's a great service to have them.

@Victor thank you for the feedback.

Aside from Hibiki, a lot of Japanese blends go unseen overseas. There's a lot of blends on the market there.
