During an Old Pulteney tasting with Andrea Spinello in Ghent, the participants were offered a mystery dram from this Highland distillery. It was very well received. It turns out that this was a single cask, number 3402, that is now bottled exclusively for the Belgian market.

The nose is soft and nutty. Clear hints of malt, coconut, fresh pears and cherries. Some coffee licqueur and marzipan. Toffee. Some milk chocolate. A mix of Bounty and Mon Cherie? Anyway, very pleasant and nicely sweet.

On the palate, it because amazingly spicy. Pepper, vanilla and cloves. Quite full bodied. Almost creamy, in fact. Very sweet with again some toffee and coffee licqueur in the lead, immediately followed by coconut.

The spiciness remains in the pretty long finish, that ends with a salty touch.

I cannot say that I am knowledgeable about Old Pulteney (this is only my fourth sof ar), but I can say that I like this very much. A true dessert malt, with a price tag of little over 90 EUR. Thanks for the sample, Anverness!
