Bought my first bottle of the 12 YO, so thought I would have a line up tonight. Went through the 12,17,21, and last, a sample of a Gordon Macphail 34 YO bottling I lucked into.

Briefly, the 12 does not work for me. The character is there, but it feels underdeveloped. The 17, likewise, fails to impress. Pity. It once did. At the 21, all is accord again. The heat, honey and saline, with just a bit of vanilla, all come into perfect play. I'm almost ready to dive into the 34 for the first time since the disastrous drunken "sharing of the bottle."

It's dark. Darker by far than the 3 OP I just had. I'd probably take it a few shades darker, but not a full click. No notes about coloring or chill filtering.

Honey. Yeah. Oranges. Sweet Tarts. Pixie Stix. A Belgian Geuze. Nice coat for the 21YO which can be found hiding deep within.

Healthy swish. Numbs the mouth nicely. Quickly drying. You can literally feel the moisture being drawn out of your cheeks. Wiping away the grippy oak, you find Juicy Fruit Gum, spearmint, more honey. Finish is so very drying. It really stays with you. Heavier on the wood than the honey lingering.

Overall, this was a nice side road to take. I think that the wood may have been a bit excessive, just due to the dryness. The 21 was the clear standout out of the 4, but this was easily the most unique of the 4. Would I buy another if I saw it? Sure.
