I'm still chasing an "affordable" Port Ellen. I think I will probably never find one =P
Was lucky enough to pick up some Rosebanks cheaply, Hart Bros 17yo, so not expecting a lot from it, but saving for a future "silent distillery" tasting flight.

I would like another bottle of Macallan cask 12yrs. in a single Oloroso Cask but only available (if at all) from the Distillery. Macallan knows a thing or two about Sherry Casks; no wonder Glenmorangie had to buy their own forest.
I don't know where all the quality Sherry casks come from but I do know that Macallan spare no expense in acquiring the cream of the crop.

@A'bunadhman And perhaps Macallan use more first fills? I don't know much about Macallan distillery practices, but if that were the case, it would certainly be an important factor.
I'm noticing a lot of new "sherry matured" whiskies coming out recently that have a less than sherry hue - I'm guessing there are lots of third fill (tired) sherry casks out there being used so they can market something loosely associated with "sherry".
From memory, at least Glenfarcas and Glendronach use a lot of quality first fill sherry casks - you can tell by the colour, too - all the intensely rich "christmas cake" or "pudding" profiles suggest use of quality first fills which impart tons of flavour and of course that lovely deep red sherry hue.

@systemdown: Your right, of course! So many Whiskies with Sherry finishes and some of the casks tied up, or should I say filled up, for years, they can't all be supreme quality 1st. and 2nd. fill, though many purport to be.

I LOVE all the excellent information coming from System and A'bunadahman! I always learn a thing or two when you two speak!
Like System I'd love a Port Ellen that's affordable, but not holding my breath. Thought I saw one for sale for a ridiculous price, but then I found out that the website was just lazy and lying to me.
I'd LOVE a George T Stagg bottled in 2010 - 2012, but so can't afford one right now hahaha. I'd also love to snag a bottle of Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX or Glenmorangie Signet. Again sadly I'm a poor lil trainer hahaha

@SquidgyAsh : Vintage Cellars at the roundabout, Indooroopilly have a gorgeous Glenmorangie "The Lasanta" for about $85. It is truly sensational but if you get one take it from the back of the display where they are in the cylinders.
And leave a couple for me, please!
Cheers!

@A'bunadhman Haha will have to check my vintage cellars when I get a chance. The online selection on them seems kinda skimpy. But thanks for the heads up!! I'm looking forward to the Glenrothes 1985 and 1991 vintage I'm snagging soon!!!

Glenfarclas 1976 Family Cask...my 'birthday bottle', though it appears that I would have to travel to England (can't ship to Canada, after all) to purchase it.
One that I can get on this side of the pond...Glenmorangie Signet.

@gobsmact Hi gobsmact, good to hear you enjoyed it, I picked that up from DM's a while ago and saving for a special occasion.

In my case (sorry to be repetitive) it would have to be the Auchentoshan 50 Year Old 1957 sherry cask 480.

I missed out on an Ardbeg 17 y/o. Would love to try it. What i really want is the new release of the 25 y/o Laphroaig Cask Strength. I'm guessing this would be something special.

@systemdown - I notcied you mentioned you bought the Hart Brothers Rosebank 17 Year Old. I saw one today in Vintage Cellars at $99.00. Do you think it's worth it? Have you had a taste of your yet? :-) Cheers.

@GlenS I haven't opened it yet but from what I've read and scores I've seen, it should be worth the asking price! Either way, an opportunity to try a dram from the famed dead distillery.

@gobsmact & systemdown - thanks for the advice. I snapped it up tonight for just over $90. I got the last one - lucky! :-)

@gobsmact - btw I noticed you were looking for the Ardbeg 17 year old. I don't know what the difference is, but you can still get the Hart Brothers independant bottling of the Ardbeg 17 - it's around AUD$100. Also I saw the Laphroaig 25 year old cask strength (50.90%) for AUD$299. Pricey but it may be worth it....

@SquidgyAsh What Port Ellen and Rosebank did you get? Rosebank is one of my favourites. The Hart Bros Rosebanks are very very good. Grassy with straight lemon juice. A real lemon grove sensation. I also find hints of icing sugar (strange I know) as the bottle gets lower. Try it will apple pie. I have five different Rosebanks and everyone is different from the next and I havent found a bad one yet.

@DramFineWhiskie The Rosebank I grabbed was Rosebank 21 yr old, distilled 1990 and bottle in 2011. One of almost 6000 bottles I believe :D It should arrive today!

@A'bunadhman a very good policy to grab the bottle at the back. I have notice too that a lot of Vintage Cellars stores tend to lay down bottles that they cant fit in the display cabinets. Not a good thing.

@SquidgyAsh Congratulations. That Rosebank and its older brother (25 year old) are absolute crackers.

@DramFineWhiskie - I bought a bottle of Octomore 2 recently from VC - it was lying down but I nonetheless bought it, taking the risk of cork damage. Here's hoping it's ok!

have the Ardbeg 17 yo Hart Brothers too. I don't think it as good as what JM reviews it as but very reasonable though.@GlenS

Stagg is about as amazing as it gets. The whiskey world would be incomplete without it. @SquidgyAsh

Try some auctions, you can bid at most online now, and you'd be amazed at the bargains you can pick up. I found just one auction (next week) that has basically every whisky that was discussed on here. Check this out as an example: mctears.co.uk/auctions/browse.aspx/… I couldn't afford it but there are four bowmore releases i Would absolutely love, Black, White, Gold and 30yrs Sea Dragon. A reakistic one though would probably be the Ardbeg Roller-coaster.

Nothing fancy or difficult to get for some, but I would be happy to get a Talisker 57 North. It's not available in quebec and didn't see it on many trips outside canada. Something rare would be any rosebank like Wodha.

Also a Rosebank for me...
Back in 2010 I picked up a beautiful Rosebank 19 y/o from SMWS for around £50. I opened it on the train home and had a measure from a plastic cup. I still lust after it...

What's one bottle, still possible to get that you pine for? For me it's any bottle of Rosebank. I need to get one!
