Now it's a dram of Glenfarclas 12yr and Buchanan's 12yr to wind down after a day of catch up from my epic and historic whisky trip. :)

@PeatyZealot - Absolutely delicious! I would easily rank the Unoaked GLENGLASSAUGH, peated, malted barley spirit drink in the top half of my 100 bottle cabinet.

Visiting the Highlands tonight boys! Starting with Edradour 10 tonight. I am really quite enjoying this whisky. A while back @SquidgyAsh had written a review of this one, and gave it a rather low rating in my opinion. In his review he had mentioned though that some oxidation would do this bottle some favors, and it seems he was quite right.

I got about half a bottle given to me by a friend, not because he didn't enjoy it but because we often exchange bottles when we're down to the last few drams. Anyway this is quite a complex whisky in my opinion, oatmeal, crystallized sugar and an incredible helping of Granny Smith apples... Very nice!

Tried some del Maguey mezcal. I'd never been a fan of agave spirits, but this stuff is really top notch. I could see myself stocking up on the Tobala.

Just opened a bottle of Bruichladdich 3D Second Edition. Remarkably similar to Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist. Never would have expected that. Glad I went with my gut and picked up a few.

@numen How is mezcal in comparison to tequila? I know its smokier(if I remember correctly) but if you can is there a pair of whiskies that you can use to make a comparison with as I have just started finding good tequila. Havent tried any mezcal though?

I am paying a visit to a whiskey that takes be back a little (Wild Turkey 101). The whiskey that I first deciphered didn't review it until now.

@GotOak91, the mezcal is definitely smokier than tequila (or at least the ones that I've had), I think as a result of roasting the agave rather than steaming it, such as the process is for tequila. The smokiness in the del Magueys reminded me a bit of some of the smokiness in Balcones (almost like dry, roasted mesquite), or an even lighter Ardbeggian (TM) smoke/peat. I've had the Tobala a few times, but haven't attempted to do any tasting notes, and am still familiarizing myself with it a bit. There are some light fruit, citrus, and floral notes - along with agave notes, which are a bit different in this one due to the peculiar agave variety.

@numen Thank you for that as I really couldn't find a comparison of the tequila- mezcal to whisk(e)y.

@GotOak91, sure thing! I'm no expert when it comes to tequila/mezcal. I tried a handful of tequilas (and even fewer mezcals) a fair bit ago, and just never got jazzed about them, or thought that they were awful, including some of the pricey ones. I just figured that I'd keep trying them until I found something that I liked, and - eureka! Found some :)

Finishing up an all-sherry night with a little vatting experiment: a full dram of A'bunadh made up of a half dram each of Batches 32 and 40. Yeow, it's good! I almost hate to say it, but I might prefer this over a straight dram of either. It's the best of both worlds: all the boldness of the 40 and all the balance of the 32. I'm down to about 1/4 bottle of each, and I'm tempted to just dump 'em both together at this point. (But don't worry, I won't.)

Talisker 57* North: Two samples, one from a current release 700ml., the other from a 2011 released 57* 200ml. - Both fine Whiskies, both enjoyable though somewhat different with the 700ml. sample more 'old School', more powerful, showing more depth of flavor on the palate and with a more resounding fiinish.

Both good Whiskies but I prefer the current 700ml. expression; others might prefer the more well mannered 2011 release. For me, 'Old School' depth of flavor in a 'thunder and lightning' package will always win the day!

Decided to take a sip from a 1985 Domaine de Boingneres Cepages Nobles armagnac. Good stuff. It's slightly disjointed at turns, but I like the combination of cocoa, wood, fruit, and flowers. I had an epic night last night with more del Maguey Tobala.

Tonight, Springbank 12 year Cask Strength and Talisker Port Ruighe (Portwood finish). I just opened the bottle of Talisker tonight and know from my brother-in-laws experience that this one is underwhelming when first opened. It gets better with oxidation, but so far, not impressive, not bad either, but not great. A decent, everyday dram, maybe? Time will tell...

@WhiskyBee: If it tastes better, it is better! Why not fill a 200ml. to the shoulders with the 50-50 vatting and shove to the back of cabinet. You will still have a couple of drams and in a few months you may have a Whisky that will 'knock your socks off'! Just a thought...

I had my first taste of the new Elijah Craig 12 yo Barrel Proof at 67.1% ABV. Very nice indeed, and at a very good (US) price point. My fingers are crossed that the rumours are true that this special issue is a trial balloon, and that Heaven Hill will make this a part of their regular line. Heaven Hill badly needs to put out more barrel strength products, and I think that Heaven Hill knows that now.

@WhiskyBee: You won't be disappointed! The more time you give #44 the more you will be rewarded. I know it's a 'drag' sitting around waiting... so, grab something from their range to drink while you wait and both their standard 10YO's open very well and are great value for money.

Slainte!
