@A'bunadhman I have to agree the 44 is an excellent batch. Have you tried the 45? I haven't seen it in Ontario but it would be nice to pick one up to save until I turn 45 in about 9 months. I did that with the 44. Nice gift. I guess even if I can't match a batch to my age every year, I could still have a dram of some batch on my birthday...

Just getting home from one hell of a night at a fantastic snack bar here in Sendai. Those of you who are in Japan or have been to Japan will probably know what a snack bar is... those of you who don't, just ask me! Settling into a wonderful dram of Glenfarclas 15 yo right now... great!

@Nozinan: Not yet. My big local ran out of #44, so I went back and no #44 or #45 (?) What they had, and I found this a bit off-putting, was #39 in a tube marked #40, with no lid! When I asked, "How come?" they informed me that they came up that way (from HQ. in Melbourne). I'm sure the #39 would be OK, but I gave it a miss, opting instead for a Talisker 'Storm', which I've yet to open - I've got about a dozen bottles open which is a record for me, not to mention samples aplenty! 'Love those 200ml. bottles; 'nothing like pulling out a sample of Springbank 21 (the old one) in tip-top nick!

Slainte!

Started with Manhattans made from Maker's 46; now doing, well, Maker's 46 straight, while watching Homeland and Louis C.K. routines (soon to move onto an episode of Louis. And then maybe The Rockford Files. We'll see.)

Old Grand-Dad BIB. It's tasty. The cashier at the local liquor store did a double take when I bought OGD along a bottle of Laphroaig 18, but that's how I roll...

Bourbondork replied

@Jonathan The current release of OGD 114 is also quite good. I've been picking up extra's of the 2012 release that's still on the shelves. For whatever reason, Beam hit on a winner with this bottling.

@CanadianNinja

@Bourbondork, thanks to @Victor I bought the Old Grand Dad 114 a short while ago and gave it a try... It is one superb whisky in my opinion! I'm unable to compare it to past releases though, I've only had the 2012 release. It is no doubt an excellent, well priced bourbon.

@Bourbondork, Welcome Back!

Read your blog this morning and hope that all is well with you. A toast to you with Masterson's 10-year-old Straight RyeWhiskey, Alberta Premium Limited Edition 30-year-old 100% rye whisky, and Alberta Springs 10-year-old rye whisky...all three from the same distillery as the Jefferson rye 10 year, and more than likely the same old still(s).

Cheers!

Aberfeldy 1990 Single Cask 56.7% ABV. Cask #040/186 Bottled 2010. This is astoundingly brilliant. I'm a huge fan of all things Aberfeldy and this is the best Aberfeldy I've had. Almost enough to make me want to move to Scotland just to be closer to the source. If you try any Aberfeldy and do not like it, give it some time, and try it again. It's some of the best stuff on Earth. Thank you Maltster!

Caol Ila 18y.

First time, from a 6cl sample. I will split it so I'll be able to taste it again. Really like this one. Only tried one other Caol Ila before, which is the Moch. The 18y is less farmy and a bit more iodine. Less hay and more BBQ. Still quite fresh and crisp though for an 18y old.

My first thought was that this was a mixture of Laphroaigh 10y and Caol Ila Moch.

O, look! My first mini review. (No score yet though..)

Started the evening with my favorite IPA (No-Li Born and Raised IPA, Spokane, WA) while cooking dinner (Pecan wood smoked Halibut, grilled Brussel Sprouts and grilled Portabello mushrooms with goat cheese). Now I'm relaxing on the deck with my lovely wife enjoying a perfect evening with a 25 year Port Ellen. It doesn't get much better than this!

Finishing the night with a 9 year Port Charlotte (Bruichladdich) from the Whisky Society (127.26 - "Student Party Aftermath"). I don't normally smoke cigars, but had one sitting around, so I decided to pair it (a Padron 2000) with the Port Charlotte. Not a bad combo, but think I will stick with just the whisky. :-)

Having a few friends over tonight. Going to make our way through some of my Japanese bottles. We will probably start with the Taketsuru 12, then on to the Yoichi 10 and finally on to Ichiro's Five of Diamonds... with a few more stops in between being very possible ; )
