Started with the last of a sample of Glen Ord 30, and then transitioned to Bouju's Tres Vieux BdF. So much for not mixing grape and grain!

A little pre-US Thanksgiving with Dramlette: Alchemist Springbank 10 (port), Glenmorangie Ealanta, and Glenfiddich 18. There will be some whisk(e)y tomorrow, too.

Visiting family for Thanksgiving, my father-in-law opened a bottle of Highland Park Svein that he received as a gift. Very nice. Tasting notes;

Colour:: Full golden, clear and bright.

Nose: Orange peel, cassia bark, wintergreen, fruity (pineapple and red currants).

Taste: Initially smoky and vanilla, dusty wood (pencil shavings), crème brulee.

Finish: Sweet and spicy (cracked black pepper), oaky and lingering.

Earlier..Wild Turkey 101. First time trying. Rich, bold and was perfect after completing a most difficult ski run. Warmed me up perfectly.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our neighbors to the south!

In lieu of turkey, I'm having a drop of Jura Superstition tonight. Not bad. Hopefully it'll open up more with time.

Had a friend over to finish off my bottle of Scapa 16 last night. Now I suppose I should post my review of it, since I did take notes during the year it was open.

Thanks much, @talexander!

And thanks also, @hunggar,...I guess that you must still be identifying with Canada now, because I don't think that there are too many US Connosr members located south of Taipei ! (ok...@SquidgyAsh)

Clynelish 14. Son of Brora. Fantastic. Certainly in my top three of all time, #1 being Brora 30. What is it about Clynelish that makes it so damn delicious?

My nephew and I cracked my bottle of Forty Creek Heart of Gold. Wow! Great nose. A little thin on the palate. Caramel on the nose, spices and vanilla on the palate.... I may have to do a review of this.

We tried it to see if I should by a spare bottle. Otherwise, by the time I get around to it there may be none left. Oh well, another expensive end to a spirit experiment. I like this as much as the confederation oak, or more, so I will try to pick up some more for another year.

At Thanksgiving Day extended family dinner: Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask, Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, Laphroaig 10, and Bacardi Reserve Rum. All were well received by relatively new whisk(e)y drinkers.

I finished the evening with some Glenmo Sonnalta PX last night. A dessert sherry if ever there was one. I can't help but make the comparison to Benriach 12 yo sherry wood, though. Sonnalta's a bit more calm and refined, but the flavour profile is quite similar.

@Victor: Hah, good point. I may live abroad but I'm still very much a Canadian.

Last night I ended up falling asleep putting my daughter to bed. Unfortunately, my dram of FC got "discarded" that night. Tonight the kids are sleeping and I'm exploiting the Heart of Gold a little more deeply. The nose is quite fantastic. Something new almost every sniff.

@paddockjudge, you may be right about this distillery. Even at 40-43% it still keeps me interested.

Taking an extra call tomorrow. Hopefully I'll earn enough to get a couple of spares...

@Nozinan - something magical happening right in our own back yard. Forty Creek is quite unique and i wish I could attend more functions with John Hall....none of us are getting any younger and whisky takes such a long time - it's not fair; however, I'm making the most of today...good to see that you are open minded. A trip to Grimsby on Whisky Weekend might be just what the good doctor needs to close the loop:)

Opened a bottle of the Glenfiddich Malt Masters Edition Sherry. Lovely nose but I wish the palate matches the nose. There's something odd with the profile, as if lacking integration.

I imagine if you had poured a dram of the standard Glenfiddich 12 YO and added a splash of sherry, you wouldn't be far off.

A pumpkin ale home-brewed by one of my basketball buddies. Nice. He brings me beers, wines, melamels, and hard cidres on Sunday morning and I take them home and figure out when in my whisky schedule I can work them in. Tonight's the night, watching football...and Kansas City just isn't likely to beat Denver.

@wtrstrnghlt @Nozinan yep theres definatley a differences. 50ml - very vanilla, smooth, sweet, peat little further in the background or midground.

PP - nose is almost completely closed for a good 5-10 minutes after pouring. Once it opens, no where near as sweet, much sootier and more pungent.

Looking at my review of the 12 the PP treatment is more like what i remember so i guess PP works better? But it was interesting how closed the nose was initially. i think more experimentation will be needed. i think @WhiskyBee has something similar going on at the moment as well.
