@Alexsweden Sounds about right. I prefer their Brukswhisky expression.

Hartley & Gibson's Oloroso Sherry, 18% ABV, 'medium dry'. I am cooking something which could use some sherry in it, so I thought I'd finally open up that bottle, and of course I had to sample it as well. Not bad.

Having some Alberta Premium while watching the first episode of season 3 of History channel's Alone. I love this show, been watching it since episode 1 of season 1. I also quite like this whisky. It's maybe not the most complex whisky ever made, but it's a nice daily sipper.

I'm thinking tonight will be one of those rare two pour nights... maybe a glass of George Dickel Rye is in my future...

Yup. George Dickel Rye. I still cry myself to sleep whenever I remember the LCBO discontinued it. Not really. Or maybe I do. You'll never know.

Anyway, watching some Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It's a weird little show, but funny.

Redbreast 12 Cask Strength, opened now for about 6 months. Wow, I really like this one. 2 drams tonight, delicious.

This is a fabulous whiskey. Definitely one of the 15 or so in my top 5!

Tonight I cracked my Stagg Jr. Just nosing it for now. A little intimidated by the 65%, and working on a review of it. What it's like on opening, and then to see how it evolves toward the end of the bottle...I may come back to the review in a year or so.

@Nozinan I see the Stagg jr flew out the door per usual at the LCBO. Still have some of my batch 3 from a couple years ago and go to it once in a while. Significant water management required for Stagg Jr I find.

@Astroke I rarely add water to my bourbon. I don't add it to Stagg Sr. or ECBP. But I find this one very HOT. I've taken some notes and added a half capful of water. The taste is the same but a little less hot, and I'm now waiting for it to settle with another half capful.

Thanks to Connosr and the Reboot, I am drinking a reserved sample of the whisky I just reviewed: GlenDronach Cask 1243. Just to be sure my notes were right. smirk It's just fantastic, even against 2 other GlenDronach single casks I'm comparing against. It must be a top 5 malt, for me. The rest is of the liquid is sealed away in a 50cl bottle, not to be touched for... possibly years! persevere (I've got other malts to finish first.)

Tonight, a new outing from Swedish Mackmyra. Its called winter dream. Bourbon matured and then finished six months in Plantation rum barrels. Quite nice for a Mackmyra. A tad too oaky.

Kilkerran 12 year old. Really nice. My second Campbeltown bottle. First was Springbank 10. If memory serves I like this one much better. Not so subtle.

I suggest Springbank 12 CS as your third Campbelltown...

@Nozinan Thanks. It's on my radar but a tad expensive for me. The Kilkerran was similar in price to the 10yo.

Poor Man's Pappy, been cooking this one for a couple of weeks. I am impressed with the results. @Paddockjudge started me down this blending road last year and I am hooked on blending different Whiskeys.

@Astroke,

It is a lot of fun when you hit a good one. We can thank @Benancio for bringing the Pappy blend to our attention.

@Alexsweden My first, and so far only, bottle of Brukswhisky was bought in March of this year. I have no idea how that compares to their first run, but I certainly didn't find it unpalatable.

As far as answering the question asked in this thread... This Sunday afternoon I'm enjoying a small pour of Wiser's Last Barrels, which has grown on me a lot since it was released this spring.

At first I didn't much care for the Bourbon-like qualities of it, but I suspect that might be somewhat due to a mismatch between my initial expectation and what was actually in the bottle. Now that I know what I'll get when I reach for it on the shelf, I find myself quite enjoying it.

I'm glad to have stocked up with an extra bottle. Or is it two? I can't remember.

@Astroke and @paddockjudge, what are you talking about? Did I miss a thread discussing blending your own home version of Pappy?

Astroke replied

@Nelom The Pappy blend came from many sites and youtube. The idea for me blend different Whiskey came from @Paddockjudge among others.

Wife's friend and her sister are visiting from Vanvouver. Last night I was on call but introduced them to the Ileach and A'bunadh (46)

Tonight I'm NOT on call so we each had a dram of Redbreast 12 YO CS. This leaves me with 1-2 servings left of a wonderful bottle.

Sipping the almost-last of my Crown Royal Monarch, which is very yummy. BTW @paddockjudge if you have any Cornerstone left, can you bring on Saturday? Pam wants to try it.

@talexander,

It is with great sadness that I must report the demise of CR Cornerstone. This bottle, and every bottle within 200 miles of me disappeared quickly. I had arranged a trade, 1 Monarch for 1 Cornerstone,,,it somehow morphed into a Monarch for Glendronach Revival. Ill check my samples to see if there is a stray. For what it is worth I rayted the Cornerstone slightly higher than CRNHR and a few points below Monarch which I tagged at 94...all batches are awesome I've had 3, 5, 8, and 9

@Bilbo161 , if you like some peat, my recommendation for your third Campbeltown is Longrow "Peated," their basic NAS. Solid stuff!

And gobble up any Kilkerran Work In Progress bottles that you ever come across.

Settling down to read with the second third of my sample of Laphroaig Cairdeas 2015, thanks again to @paddockjudge. I find the mini Glencairns, coincidentally obtained from Laphroaig, are best for small pours of Islay drams.

It is a cold night tonight. To me that screams for peat. And what better than Ardbeg? So I have Ardbeg Supernova SN2014 and Corryvreckan (October 11th 2014) before me. Both are fantastic. I am amazed how light in color the SN2014 is after all that fuss about sherry cask involvement. The Corry is far darker.

Both are fantastic peat monsters.

Another snow storm tonight.... after some crazy driving and multiple trips outside shovelling i relaxed with a book and an episode of an old Korean political drama. After reading about an Amrut tasting on allthingswhisky.com I was inspired to have a half dram of a slowly disappearing bottle of the heated CS, plus I decided to briefly revisit Stagg Jr. This time (maybe because it is a week opened, or because the Amrut primed my palate with 60+% ABV, I was able to sip it and really enjoy it neat.

@Nozinan, no snow here tonight, but weather.com puts our Gaithersburg temp a degree or two colder than Toronto, which is to say, frigging cold.

I am experimenting for the very first time with adding a couple of drops of "medium dry" Oloroso sherry to a sulphur contaminated malt. It does help in this particular case, a 13 yo Chieftain Glenburgie, but I am not so optimistic about a malt with heavier contamination than this one has.

7 years ago 0

@Victor
Victor replied

That Glenburgie from yesterday is actually worse off than I had hoped. Yesterday's experiment with Oloroso sherry was actually with Tomatin 15 Tempranillo, and sherry added in that case helped a great deal. The matchstick sulphur still shows in the finish of the Glenburgie 13 yo even with the sherry added. Too bad.

Ardbeg 10 yo 16/11/2015 I am comparing to Laphroaig 10 CS Batch 7. Night and Day. The Laphroaig is the Day. That 16/11/2015 is a crappy batch of Ardbeg 10.
