For the boys night out started with a Caol ila 12 yr, then a Talisker 18, wine with supper, then afterwards Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Glenfarclas 105 for dessert. A great time.

Ledaig Aged 10years 46.3% abv. There is another version 10yo. @ 43%.The 46.3% is coming together very nicely though freshly opened it seemed it might be a challenge - not so!

It needs a little time for the splinters at the back of the palate to soften; time in the glass, time in a large decanter and all is well. Overpower honey nose (Geraldton Wax, the aussies will know), lovely and fragrant and smokey, not unlike the delicious H/Ps.

I'll do a review of this fine Whisky, soon. The longer it's open the better it gets.

I have been sampling from a bunch of open bottles prior to adding Private Preserve gas in hopes of retarding further oxidation. Right now I am sampling Forty Creek Barrel Select. A couple of months ago I reported here that the sulphur that others had reported in this whisky had come out to be strongly tasted in my bottle after about 8-10 months of the bottle first opened. At that point the whisky had become rather unpleasant. Now, very interestingly, further air exposure seems to have allowed the sulphur to have dissipated to the point of imperceptibility. What a nice surprise!

Bladnoch 16 single cask from Signatory. Thick feel, grassy taste. Delicious on a late sunny afternoon after the walk home from work.

Had the last two large drams of Strathisla 12, to finish off the bottle, last night while suffering through another Chicago Bears defeat at the hands of their long time archrival (I can't even bring myself to type out that teams' name...). :(

@Sroberts86...Unfortunately, I have almost no experience with Chicago pubs. The only one I can recommend (at least from the 'good people' perspective) is Miller's Pub on South Wabash. Here's their website:

www.millerspub.com

Pretty limited whisk(e)y menu, but a decent set of options for craft beers. Others who actually live in the Chicago area would be better able to give guidance to a good whisky bar (I would be curious to know as well, for future reference).

@Sroberts86...also, get to a Binny's store (the South Loop location typically has the largest selection) if you want to make some whisky purchases. Any 'Binny's Handpicked' bottles that I have purchased have been at least good, usually great, and are generally well regarded.

Greetings! I'm a newbie, so I thought I'd jump in and make a post here, since I had a rather fun tasting last night: Laphroaig 18, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength Batch 003, and my souvenir bottle of Laphroaig that I got when I took their Distiller's Wares tour in July. It's 13 years old (1999 vintage, Cask 5171) and is 59.8% ABV. This was a fun session! I realize this thread is "what are you drinking now", but I didn't get around to posting last night, so I'm bending the rules a bit. I brushed my teeth before I went to bed, but I seemed to have a bit of Laphroaig aftertaste in my mouth when I woke up this morning. Talk about a long finish!

Last night I attended a Balvenie event in downtown Seattle. Started off with a "Blood and Sand" cocktail (Balvenie Doublewood, sweet vermouth, orange juice and a cherry liquer - shaken with ice, strained and poured into a martini glass.) Very refreshing on a warm afternoon / evening, but I couldn't really taste the doublewood. Fortunately, it wasn't too sweet.

For the main event, tasted (in order) 14 year Caribbean Cask, 15 year Single Barrel, 21 year Portwood and finally 17 year Peated Cask. Overall, a very nice event.

Forgot to mention, at the Balvenie event last night, the host mentioned that the Balvenie 50 year Single Cask (relased in honor of Dave Stewart's 50th year anniversary) was available for $35,000 (USD). Of the 88 bottles available worldwide, only 10 were made available here in the states.

@A'bunadhman I hope she enjoyed it! :)

Tonight I got a sample from a friend of the Ardbeg Alligator Committee Reserve... I know that Ardbeg might be considered overly hyped by some... but oh my how I enjoy their bottles. This one is no exception! Just trying to make it last as long as possible.

I also had an opportunity to attend a Balvenie tasting this week, and enjoyed it. To add to @bwmccoy notes, the host Lorne showed off the new bottle of DoubleWood 17yr old. We did not have an opportunity to taste it, sadly. It will be available in the US market in October, but what really surprised me was the price: $129.99. The standard DoubleWood 12 year old is generally $49. This will join it as a standard core range product, available indefinitely. I suppose they are pricing it for it's age — the price point sits right between the 15 year old Single Barrel and the 21 year old Port Wood.

The event itself was very nice, and I thought Balvenie made a big effort to make it special and to share some great drams.
