Once again it's another epic battle of West coast vs East coast...

A wee dram of both the Oban 14 yr, and Clynelish 14 yr...

Just finished the last of my Talisker 18 - had a wee dram decanted. I am traveling to CA and have the opportunity to pick up more there, but damn, the price is high. Followed with a dram of Johnnie Walker Green, and there are definite similarities. Then, followed that with the 2012 DE. OK, that one is its own beast. Breakdown. The 18 is the best of the 3, but is 135.00. The Walker Green I can get for 50.00. The DE for 72.00. I may get 1 more bottle of the 18 to put down, but I have to say, the other 2 malts come damn close in quality.

@Jonathan Clynelish 14 is mind-blowing in a subtle way. It really is amazing. You should find a remote hillside to taste it upon. You should have vast space about to really get it.

Well, this is embarrassing. Ever have one of those nights when you forget what you're drinking? I remember going to the cabinet, considering my choices for a few moments, pouring a dram...and 15 minutes later, I forgot what I poured. And it's my first of the evening, so I'm quite sober, thanks.

Let's see...no peat, moderate malt, heavy spice...pretty good...worth an 87 at least!

@PMessinger - PC8 is excellent, like the others in the series that I have tasted (PC6 and PC7). If I had to rank them in order of preference, I would say PC6 was my favorite, followed by PC7, then PC8. Would love to find a PC5, but even if I could, I'm afraid the cost would prohibitive.

Highland Park 18. It disappointed me last time, but tonight it was what I remembered. Simply Wonderful! For a whisky known for a little smoke and peat...I think this whisky tastes much better if you start the night with it versus sampling a few other drams first. Flavors seem to get lost if I don't try early in the evening.

Had a whisky tasting last night for a group of fellow whisky lovers, Ardbeg 10yr, Ardbeg Uigeadil, Jameson special reserve 12 year old Irish whiskey, The Hive, Bowmore darkest 15 yr, Bruichladdich Laddie 10 yr, Auchentoshan Valinch 2012 , 1994 Glen Garioch, Amrut whisky, Mackmyra The First Edition, Cardhu 12 yr, The Yamazaki, by Suntory, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12 yr, 1792 Ridgemont reserve (bourbon). Tasting started with lightest to most peated with 1/2 ounce pours and food provided by my wonderful wife. A fun evening was had by all. I think everyone was in agreement that the Amrut was the least favorite of the evening.

Finishing up some souvenirs of my trip to Scotland last summer: Cadenhead's Campbeltown Blended Malt and later their Islay Blended Malt. They fill the bottles for you in the store right from a cask. Wish I could get them refilled here at my local liquor store in the U.S.!

Enjoying my first dram of Glenmorangie Astar in many months. I looked at my notes from the review I wrote back in November and am amazed at how it's evolved in its five months on the shelf. What it's lost in complexity it's gained in body. Overwhelming vanilla and spice now, almost like cask-strength vanilla ice cream topped with a peppercorn medley. Luscious stuff.

BenRiach cask samples at Whiskymesse Vienna - two outstanding 1st fill Pedro Ximenes casks from 1995 and 1996 - the 1995 was a real cracker. As they bought Glenglassaugh i had a 1973 39yo single cask from 2md fill oloroso which was putstanding and then Ardbeg Tasting with Karen Fullerton - Ardbeg Ten / Uigeadail and Corryvreckan deconstructed: New Make, cask samples of 1st fill Bourbon, 1st fill oloroso and virgin oak casks - delicious stuff. Last Masterclass: Suntory; nice samples from mizunara and different sherry cask sizes from Hakushu and yamazaki - a 26 yo sherry was out of this world.

@Wodha,...Bulleit Rye, Templeton Rye, Redemption Rye, Dickel Rye...LDI, LDI, LDI, LDI...not that that makes them all the same...presumably they use different yeast strains, and maybe some variations in the mashbills.

Poured a "bottle kill" dram of A'Bunadh Batch #32 last night. It. Some months in the open bottle really mellowed the alcohol bite. Perfect.
