Right now, I'm drinking coconut water and orange juice. On my way home, I stopped in the woods for a glass of whisky and ordered The MacTarnahan (Glenfarclas 9.5). It was $8. A very good deal. After ten minutes in the glass, the toffee, seasalt, and brown sugar came out. I drank it neat and spoke with the bartender about his Green Beret father and his youth spent in a gang in Oakland CA. Outside, a waterfall splashed down a sheer cliff face of 70 feet and the other way, the Sandy River flowed by impatiently, freighted with spring melt from Mt. Hood. All told, it was a pleasant detour on my way home.

Tonight, a 10 year Caol Ila from SMWS (53.157) "Paint your own picture", distilled Dec. 7th, 2000. This is an excellent, lighter version of this Islay favorite.

@teebone673: If you get the chance try Glenfiddich 15yo.DE. similar profile but so much more and usually around 50.5% abv. It is available at a lot of Duty Free Stores.

Good Luck!

@A'bunadhman thanks for the tip. Regular Glenfiddich 15 is an old favorite, so the DE really peaks my interest. I'll be on the lookout. Thanks again, man.

Relaxing on a rainy Friday night with a 21 year Rosebank (Nov. 14th, 1990) SMWS 25.63 “Poire et poivre” (Pear and Pepper), followed by a 25 year (Nov. 1982) single cask Port Ellen form The Old Malt Cask company and finished with a Bruichladdich Octomore 2.2 Orpheus finished in French oak casks from the Bordeaux Chateau, Petrus.

@talexander - I couldn't agree with you more! I love how subtle it is on the nose and the initial taste followed by the huge explosion of favors and long finish. Masterful stuff!

@Wodha Great to hear if you want my seceret formula it's roughly the last 3 inch of OP12 then add the last 2 inches of RB12 then add the last 2 inches of Dalmore 12 then let age for 12 minutes then enjoy. Hope this works for you. :)

14 yr Mortlach - Duncan Taylor NC2 series... uh oh, only 2 fingers left in the bottle...

Starting off with a Clynelish 14. For a relatively light dram, there is a lot going on in this one. I'm now curious about the DE, which I have heard good things about.

I haven't had the Clynelish DE but do have 5 other bottlings.... so it is just a matter of time for me...

moving on to a 13yr Mortlach from Murray McDavid.... much smoother than the 14yr from DT - probably due to move from 53% to 45%

@Jonathan @chrisbator - both the 14 and the DE are quite good...different, but good. I just posted a review of the 1993/2010 17yr DE a couple of days ago. If you can find it, I'd encourage you to try them back to back. At our St. Clynelish's Day Celebration in March the consensus was that the 14 was better, but personally, I think they are equal in terms of quality, but have different taste profiles.

So, what am I drinking now? Ironically, earlier this afternoon it was the Clynelish DE, followed by the 14yr, and then this evening a Pisco Sour.

Last night, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban (Port finish), followed by SMWS 16.32 (10 year Glenturret - "Leather armchairs and old wardrobes" from a refill port pipe cask), followed by a side by side tasting of a 10 year Caol Ila from Gordon & Macphail finished in Madeira casks and a 10 year Coal Ila (SMWS 53.157 "Paint your own picture" from a refill ex-bourbon hogsheads. Though completely different, they complimented each other quite well. Not surprising, but the Madeira finish had a bit more character than the non-wine finished version, but you can't go wrong with either one.

Got a new bottle of Lagavulin 16 yesterday. So I thought I'd spend tonight finishing up the few drams left in my old bottle. Not many better choices for a single-expression evening, I'd say.

Started the night with 20 year Costco (Kirkland Signature) Speyside - Sherry finish from an unknown distillery, followed by Black Raven Trickster IPA (local Microbrew-Redmond, WA), then Rittenhouse Rye and ending the night with a Bruichladdich PC8.

Last night I drank from a bottle of Dewar's White Label which my host reported to me was 6 or 7 years old. It was very very good, on both nose and palate, and really tasty compared to the rather bland stuff labeled Dewar's White Label which I have had from very recent year batches.

@Lars - a pairing that I enjoy very much is rye and top shelf parmesan.

Lot 40, CR Reserve, Masterson's, Alberta Dark Horse - the sherry notes add to the pleasure, - Gibson's 100th Anniv Grey Cup, Pike's, Forty Creek John's Private Cask or especially Port Wood Reserve. Parmigiano-reggiano or grana padano, which is younger and less crumbly, are my choices.

This would fit well between the Dalwhinnie 15 and the Laphroaig 10.

Sounds delightful - wish I wasn't 1500 kms (950 miles) away...that would be an epic whisky mission.

Glen Grant tonight. Picked up (and have now opened) a club bottling of A.D. Rattray bottled 27yr Glen Grant - Cask Strength. Like this much more than the 22yr Duncan Taylor bottling I have... Not missing the Macallan event I'm missing tonight too much anymore.

Back from the Brisbane Whisky Expo and tried 7 Aussie malts I've not had before (including a stupendous Nant CS 63% Port wood) and the first batch of Starward 43% Sherry matured which shows great promise and fantastic for just 2.5 years of age (approximately).

Was also surprised by Hellyer's Road - seems they've fixed some issues with earlier editions and their "original" 8 and 10 year olds are really good, especially the Pinot finish.

Pick of the night - Highland Park 28 yo Mackillop's Choice CS 55.6%. Awesome! Marriage of HP and Islay characteristics, totally unexpected character from the HP. Like an SMWS bottling, perhaps. Simply amazing. The Dalmore 24yo CS Mackillop's Choice (the first "naked" Dalmore I've had) was also fantastic.
