When this release of the Talisker 25 Year Old hit the shelves in 2006, it was still bottled at a cask strength (while subsequent releases are now bottled at the trademark 45,8%).

The nose is spicy to be sure, but what immediately stands out is the fact that it is very fruity. Plums, mirabelles, litchi, quince and unripe pineapple. Then the peat kicks in, but the big maritime notes remain limited to some wet rocks and seaweeds. Some baking butter takes care of a fatty touch. Caramelized lime and a hint of oyster sap. Sweetened espresso with some vanilla in the background. Very appealing and complex.

Powerful arrival on the palate. Loads of pepper and peat, loads of oak and loads of salt. But the sweetness wants to play along. The espresso returns. The fruit is not as tropical as on the nose, more like toffee apples and sultanas now. Some almonds. Lime. Midpalate, the maritime character shines through. A hint of lavende rand hay. Nice smokiness. Grand.

Wonderfully long finish on smoke, spices and orange zest.

Verrrrrry good! A Talisker to savour gently while enjoying a good football match. Thanks, Whiskysamples!
