Tobermory was closed for a while for renovation, but now they are back in full operation. And they immediately launched a gin, who say that coming? But I’ll stick to the whisky, in this case a 20 years old from the German bottler Liquid Sun. With a refill cask you can never tell how many times it has been used before, but this malt is very pale.
The nose is rather musty – something I often get with Tobermory – and quite sweet. Lots of vanilla, a few apples and some zespri. It also has a little dirty and smoky side, making me think this should actually have been named Ledaig. All the way in the back I get some yoghurt with pineapple, which tells me this might have been a sherry cask. Who can tell?
Good mouth feel and strength. It is a lot sweeter now with a truckload of vanilla (make that vanilla ice-cream) and young, yellow apples. But also quite smoky now – yet, this is Ledaig alright. Piquant on chili peppers, cardamom and liquorice. Some apricots and pineapple juice appears.
After the smoke has cleared somewhat, the finish becomes quite candy-like.
Very nice Tobermo… errr… Ledaig, that shows quite a bit of peat even after twenty years of maturation.
