In April of last year, this Tomatin 1988 was added to the core range. It will be released in batches. Batch 2 has just been released, but I will try the first release. It is a Tomatin that matured for 25 years on bourbon and port casks.
Wonderfully light, but very fruity nose on apples, pears, citrus, pineapple and strawberries with loads of icing sugar. A slice of melon, some Fanta and a lot kernel of pepper. On the edge of being candy-like. Very inviting. A touch of woodsmoke in the background. I quite like this.
Good body and prickly on the palate. Spicy and warming. The fruit from the nose returns, but in a pastry. Some vanilla, caramel and red fruit kick in. The pastry is soaked in honey. The woodsmoke returns on the palate and lingers.
In the long, warm finish both the honey and the fruit reappear, to die in a burst of fresh fruit.
This whisky is a dessert in and of itself. For those among us with a sweet tooth. Around 200 EUR for a bottle.
