Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Sherry Finish

Our third of the day (I'll do the other two tomorrow) is another 10 year old malt, from Cooley. It is matured in American oak and finished in sherry casks. This bottle has been open for almost a year.

The colour is a medium amber. On the nose you get rich sherry notes of dates, figs and dark chocolate. It's a bit sulphurous though (which is tamed by a drop of water), and the malt is overshadowed by the cask.

On the palate it's mostly raisin with some malt again overwhelmed by the sherry. Some chocolate notes, with oak filling the mouth. The sulphur is not as apparent here, which is fine but it's a bit bland, and with a thin mouthfeel. Water adds a bit of spice.

The short finish has a bit of oak to it but is otherwise very muted. Pretty disappointing, but I wasn't crazy about the port finished Tyrconnell I had a few years ago.

Nose - Caramel, burnt treacle, candy floss and orange. Sweet and intense.

Palate - Orange with sweeter fruit coming through. Treacle and hard-boiled sweets flavours. Caramel is there with a woody oak astringency in the background. There's a strawberry edge later on.

Finish - Sweet but very drying and slightly prickly. Long lasting - wood tannins playing a big part here.

I've not tried many Irish whiskeys but this is easily the best I can recall - much more complex and intense than the 'Irish benchmark' of Bushmills 10. It's delicious and very moreish.
