Picked up a Tyrconnell 16 year, aged in Bourbon Casks at 46%. Why, I really like Irish Whisky and at $100 Cad this was a reasonable price for the LCBO.

Limited edition anniversary bottlings of malt whisky:

  • Another couple of bottles of the Lagavulin 200th Anniversary Limited Edition 8 Year Old. These are on sale at a local bottle-o.

  • Another bottle of the Starward 10th Anniversary, now released to the public. This one is earmarked for enjoyment so that I can keep the distillery sourced bottles intact.

@sengjc I tried that Starward 10th anniversary last weekend. Quite a nice expression.

I bought a bottle of Amrut Spectrum on the weekend. Will take a photo and post. I tasted it last weekend and just had to buy, a long and complicated finish.

I've taken a quote from whiskycask dot com that explains what they've done here:

"ex-Bourbon casks for three years. Then, in an experiment that could only be described as Frankenstinian in nature, five separate finishing casks were created at an undisclosed location in Europe from new American oak, new Spanish oak, and new French oak, along with previously used Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. Staves from each cask were then removed and replaced with staves from each of the other four casks to create five complete casks with five different types of wood in each one."

While browsing the options on a large liquor retail chains web site I saw that they listed Springbank 12 Cask Strength. I emailed the head office to check that what they were advertising was what they actually had in stock - and I was assured that it was. So today, I stopped off and bought one of the last bottles. Batch 6 from January 2013. Paid $110 NZ (google tells me $79 US). I bought my 1st Springbank (the latest 12 CS) a few months ago and I'm loving it. I must buy the Standard 10 soon but when it is only $20 cheaper I was keen to grab the CS while I still could.

@Frost I'll be curious to know if it is any good. I suspect it will either be really good or hideously bad.

@Hewie I think you'll be happy with your choice. That's a good price. Springbank CS (where you can find it) is generally upwards of $100 Canadian.

Gone back to my beginnings a couple of years ago and currently having a glass of Aberlour 10, 40%abv chill filtered and possibly colour added but still love it. Tasty, cheap and nothing complex perfect after a tough day at work.

@Pete1969 When you start off with the higher proof, bolder stuff, it's hard to appreciate what people see in the 40% stuff.

My late whisky mentor had advised me to go through the JW series in order then move to Fiddich add livet 12 before going anywhere else. That was in 2008/9. I started my journey in 2011 and didn't heed that advice. So I've been a CS person. Only recently have I started to appreciate some of the less powerful whiskies.

@Nozinan 46% makes a good starting point, and there are lots of good ones out there. I'm sipping on some Springbank 10 at the moment.

I bought a bottle of Springbank 15 recently and had a dram last night. Tonight I am into the Springbank 10 for comparison and I think I actually like it better.

@BlueNote I am on the same page as you. Aside from the airy and light mouthfeel, which I find peculiar, the 15 seems to be the only Springer that I am indifferent toward. The sherry is overly dominant imho, obscuring the base malt spirit that makes Springbank so special.

Sheckle for sheckle, the 10 can't be beat.

@KRB80 Yes, I found the 15 slightly bitter. I'll give it another try after it's had some air. Meantime, the 10 suits me just fine, both quality and price wise. Cheers.

As discussed above, my new purchase: Amrut Spectrum & Amrut Fusion

@Frost Spectrum is one of the special releases I have not had a chance to try, and probably never will here in Canada.

Please enjoy it on my behalf.

Fusion is probably one of the most underrated of the Amrut line. It was the first one I tried and was fantastic. Because it's a standard bottling (albeit at 50%) it gets less attention than the CS, seated CS and limited and single cask releases. I have a second bottle waiting for me. Sadly it is listed but no longer available in Ontario. Appears to be about $80 in Calgary.

Just picked up this Ardbeg Corryvrecken because of the whiskies I tried during my visit to Ardbeg, I like this one the best. I will be opened shortly (minutes, not days).

@Victor Sure can... just took my first sip; unpolluted, as at the distillery it was my 5th tasting... my first impression was "powerful."

@Nozinan I did sample the Spectrum last week before buying. It's very complicated with a lot going on in the middle and finish. I just had to buy it.

Fusion was my first Amrut, and is a whisky I enjoy a lot. I've had friends and colleagues sceptical about Indian malt, Fusion has changed their mind every time.

Purchased this online in Nova Scotia, my sister picked it up for me and sent the picture. I was always curious about Sullivan's Cove American Oak and the price of $120 cad, tax in seemed to be reasonable as a world wide price. Not sure if it id worth it, but why not?

Not sure why she included the WWA marketing placard.

Bunch of this showed up today at a few LCBO stores, was able to grab 2 in Oakville. Excellent price point of $46 cad made this favorite a no brainer. Perfect timing as I just emptied half a bottle into OWA 107.

@MadSingleMalt

@dcbill , when I was first getting my bearings in Ardbeg's lineup, my take on the Corryvreckan & Oogie was that the Corryvreckan was powerful while the Oogie was beautiful. And I've always preferred power.

(Apologies to those who've heard me say this before.)

@MadSingleMalt I must get another bottle of Corry. I seem to be an outlier in preferring the Oogie. For me it has a nice balance of power and beauty, kinda like my wife.

@Astroke, were there any more weller 12 available in the oakville LCBO store?

@OdysseusUnbound

@DevD The Weller seems to have sold out (at least near me) fairly quickly. Must be a good deal and/or some good juice.

@DevD Sorry for not responding sooner, there was only 1 left behind the tasting bar at the time of purchase. I got 2 because he offered it or else it was 1 per person.
