Who's the Second Best Whiskey Video Reviewer

It's like asking who's the second greatest hockey player ever. We all know Gretsky is the greatest. It's a debate who's the second greatest.

Ralfy is the best Whiskey Video Reviewer. Who else do you like?

I like the "LiquorHound" on YouTube.

Technically, that could be you.

If you had asked who the second best video whisky reviewer was, it would be tougher. Ralfy is my favourite in that case.

But you asked who the best whisky video reviewer was. You were quick to point to Ralfy, and I will assume you mean he does great whisky review videos. That makes you a video reviewer, and from what I can tell, a very good one.

But I have appraised his reviews for years, and in fact have used them to teach students in medicine (yes, I have found a legitimate way to tie it in to my teaching which I can share if there is interest...), so I think that makes me the best reviewer of whisky videos.

And that, @Benancio, makes you second best.

Please don't take offence. I would concede you probably beat me in lots of other more important whisky categories...

And for the record, Gordie Howe was "the greatest". Gretsky is the "great one".

Occasionally I see what Amy Douglas has to say. She has a youtube channel called "Whiskybitch". I like her enthusiasm, but I don't find the reviews too useful.

Jason Debly does some video reviews on the east coast, but mostly he just blogs.

And of course, some of the best whisky videos are produced by some of our colleagues on Connosr. I'm aware of @Markjedi and @Maltactivist, but there may be others.

@Nozinan is right, Connsor has a some good video reviewers,
I watch @Markjedi and @Maltactvist as well, like them both . The WhiskeyBitch is entertaining.

@Alexsweden you should check out some of the the others, there are quite a few that are very good.

The LiquorHound has an amazing collection and I find that his reviews are honest. He doesn't love everything he tastes and I like that. The honesty helps me make an informed decision on whiskey I have never had and we seem to have similar tastes.

The Whiskybitch is fun. She loves peat and huge bourbons; if you do too, you'll be in good company. Just expect super-high scores—which is fine by me. She calls them enjoyment ratings, and dang if she don't enjoy her whisky. She's the second best.

The Whisky Wednesday guy is fine.

The 2-3 young hipster doofuses who know nothing and review everything from their dingy home basement bar (?) are worth a laugh. I forgot the name of the guys or the Youtube "channel" or whatever, but if you've seen them, you know whom I'm talking about.

There's also that guy who's done tons of head-to-heads, like Lag 16 versus Ardbeg Oogie the like. Sometimes has has a shield from The Legend of Zelda on the wall behind him. You know that guy? He's pretty good too, but silent for a while methinks.

There is also a guy who does a parody of Ralfy reviewing hot water with lemon and honey. He uses phrases like Ralfy does. Quite fun.

I've heard others say they get tired of "What are you drinking", I thought I'd try something funny and informative.

You have to understand the German language, but I get some good information from Horst Luening from whisky.de. His review of the Lagavullin Distillers Edition is epic. His moan of joy made my wife think I was watching an X-rated movie. No honey, I'm watching a whisky tasting :)

I was spelunking on YouTube again tonight. I can now tell all you good Connosrpudlians that the guy who's done tons of head-to-heads is Luke Rymarz, and the hipster doofuses I disparaged are to be found on YouTube under the moniker "zanesttc." Now that's good watchin'.

Horst Luening does reviews in English at whisky.com his Mike gets a bit annoying as he swills the drink in his mouth but he does review some rare whisky. He even had a 42year old Black Bowmore, would not like to explain that bill to the wife, also reviews a lot of standard stuff and does not hide the fact if he does not like a bottle.

Another vote for Horst Luening. He covers a great range of expressions and I would say he is "not for sale", everything he says is genuine. Much like Ralfy, they're both great.

Now I've watched a couple of videos from whisky.com with Horst. I have to say that he isn't bad but I wish he would be more specific.

While Ralfy points out specific notes Horst says "Sherry aroma" and "a Little honey", "aromatic" but he doesn't get into specifics like Ralfy which i really appreciate. He keeps it short and to the point but elaborating al little wouldn't hurt

Though I'm not a huge American whiskey fan, I would still say Mark Pyle at sourmashmanifesto. He's knowledgeableand approachable, and his tasting notes are useful, clear, and concrete. I just wish he was more active.

@gfc Good call, Pyle is the American bourbon version of Ralfy. I frequent sour mash manifesto, he has slowed down but he's still putting new stuff out. The old reviews are still spot on.

Thx for the input.

I enjoy Ralfy and then Horst. Both have their strengths in their reviews; however, both of them have their quarks that a tad annoying. Horst and his mouthwash whisky swooshing has actually made me feel a bit sick in the stomach at times. I have to mute the volume when he gets to this part to the review. His son does alright in the reviews but I prefer him doing the tours of the distilleries rather than the reviews. As for Ralfy, well, I understand that he is on a "mission," and I resepct him for that. I guess I do get a bit tired of "just an opinion," and his continuous reminders of his soap box issues, E150A, Non-Chilled filtration, NAS, and pricing points. Of course these are important issues, but in some videos he goes a bit overboard with them. Nevertheless, I enjoy his reviews and his humor. I especially enjoyed when he took the mallet and smashed the metal top to the Stranahans when he did the Stranahan's SMW review.

However, two guys who I enjoy watching, on Youtube, are The Scotch Test Dummies (STDs). They are just two enthuasiast whose videos are as if you are in the room with them. Their combination of humor, stories, and reviews keep me coming back. The one thing I like about them compared to other people who have been mentioned here they don't come across at all as being pretentious about their reviews. They make mistakes and they joke about them in their next reviews. They also receive criticism and they also refer to that as well in their reviews. Two good guys enjoying a dram and sharing a moment, sounds alright to me.

A few others whom I used to watch on occasion, but not regularly, and have stopped (for a variety of reasons) all found on youtube:

The Good Dram Show Whisky Wednesday Whiskybitch

If you are into America Whiskey then the Bourbon Brothers have decent reviews, short and to the point with high end Bourbons and down to bottom shelf. Lets face it Jason Pyle is no longer on youtube.
