@timmyh80 - cheers for that, much appreciated. The next time I look at ordering, I'll certainly give that number a call! And congrats on the baby! Boy or girl? I'm the new father to a 6 month old baby girl myself!

In San Jose, CA there's my favorite whisky shop: K&L Wines in Redwood City. They also have a location in San Francisco, and another in Hollywood: www.klwines.com

Living in Virginia, USA, we have state run monopoly liquor stores. Although the selection can be fairly good, they don't always stock what I am looking for.

So far I have ordered thru two online shops that provided quick shipping and reasonable prices. This online distributor is in New Jersey...

www.shoppersvineyard.com/store/pc/home.asp

and this one is in Scotland...

www.lfw.co.uk.

As for a good search resource when looking for a particular bottle, I found this website to be very useful whether you need a brick and mortar or online store...

www.wine-searcher.com

In the box "Wine Name", type in the name of the Whisky / Spirit you are looking for and click search. This is how I found a handful of online retailers that ship spirits to Virginia.

As for a local pub with a good selection of Scotch Whisky choices, check out "The Pub" in Hampton Roads and Fredricksburg. Quite an impressive selection of Whisky's and Whiskey's...

I hope the Connosr community finds these websites I've shared useful.

Not to difficult to find Malt whisky here in Glasgow but this flyer highlights a few specialist bars
scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/Whisky-bars-of-glasg… (also includes info on a couple of distilleries within striking distance of the city)

Most of the supermarkets including Waitrose; Sainsbury; Morrisons;Asda and Tesco have a varied supply -usually with something on 'special'.

In the West End, for an off sales with a wide selection, look out for a Peckhams or Oddbins.

There are a couple of 'Tourist' shops in the city centre; The Whiskey Shop (chain) in the Buchanan Galleries and Robert Graham in West Nile Street

If you're coming through Glasgow Airport, go to www.worldofwhiskies.com where you can pre-order for inbound or outbound collection.

On line, I've used master of malt (mentioned before) and the Whiskey Exchange. www.masterofmalt.com and www.thewhiskyexchange.com respectively.

Not that I buy that much myself, you understand !!!

I mentioned K&L Wines in Redwood City, CA earlier in this thread. This weekend I had a chance to stop by Beltramo's in Menlo Park, CA (just down the street) - they have an even bigger selection, and the same (or better) prices. Check them out if you're in the area!

If anyone knows of a good store in South Florida, please let me know. There's a Total Wine nearby which is ok, but not great.

When I was in NZ a couple of years ago I went to a fantastic whisky bar in Dunedin Railway Station - I don't know if it's still there, but as a Scot thousands of miles from home, it was a great reminder.

A friend of mine is travelling to San Mateo, CA in a couple of weeks time, and I'm hoping he'll have time to pick me up a bottle. I found the BevMo store on the internet, which seems to have good prices and a good selection. Is that the place to go? Is there another store in San Mateo that someone can recommend (especially if they carry an Ardbeg beyond the 10 yo)? Thanks

@Pudge72 BevMo has an "ok" selection, but their prices are not the lowest. your friend should try to go to Beltramo's (best) or K&L Wines & Spirits (almost as good) in Menlo Park and Redwood City, respectively, just down the road from San Mateo - about 20 minutes. Awesome selection, best prices anywhere I've seen in Northern California. Cheers!

@ScotchNoob - Thank you for the references, I looked them up last night and both stores do beat BevMo for selection (especially) and price...I'm hoping my friend can make the detour to Beltramo's or K&L to pick up an Ardbeg Uigedail (only available in downtown Toronto stores at triple the price...yikes!!).

A superb Australian online retailer is Graham at The Odd Whisky Coy (www.theoddwhiskycoy.com.au) - he's got a fantastic range, knows his onions, and above all else is a thoroughly decent chap.

In Glasgow, I went to The Ben Nevis and The Pot Still (as mentioned in a previous post by @db44, info can here: scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/Whisky-bars-of-glasg…). The Ben Nevis had a nice selection and atmosphere, though unfortunately served the whisky in tumblers. The Pot Still had a very impressive collection, knowledgeable staff, and served in Glencairns. I'd recommend both, but The Pot Still was my favourite of the pair.

I also visited Mark Connelly and friends' The Good Spirits Co. (www.thegoodspiritsco.com). The shop is beautiful, well stocked with interesting finds at good prices, and features 20 cL bottlings of their "living cask", which is good fun. Matthew and Mark were extremely helpful.

Seven Grand is the best whisky bar in L.A. Its very rare to try whisky samples or tastings in liquor stores here, so I go there to taste before I buy a bottle. Here's a partial list of their whisky menu...

Seattle Washington: While living there, I found only one place that had a good selection: St. Andrew's Bar and Grill in Green Lake. However, for those willing to venture out a bit, Snohomish Washington has Fred's Rivertown Alehouse. It was a diamond-in-the-rough find that has a full wall of scotches, and a very nice owner. After ordering a few with a friend, the owner, Chewie, came over to chat and we ended up splitting the rest of his bottle of Lagavulin 30.

As for purchasing, Washington is also allowed only to have state-run stores. That hasn't stopped the contract store in Snohomish (The Clearview store on the website) from assembling the best collection of scotches in the state. Apparently they have a bit of leeway being a contract store, and are able to pick and chose from the approved list which bottles they'd like to carry.

I currently live in alkmaar and cannot think of a better place in Noord Holland than the Hielander restaurant. Excellent food combined with a wisky(s) from nearly every distillery from Scotland. A good selection of Irish whiskys as well.
