Golden Cask is a series from House of MacDuff, a somewhat lesser known (to me) bottler. I previously tried a good Ardmore from owner John McDougal. This Bowmore may be 15 years old, the ABV is still a whopping 58,5%. So I will keep some water nearby.
The nose is surprisingly soft and shows barely any fruit. What I do get is fish oil, vanilla and a tiny bit of citrus and – again quite surprising – some banana. But it is the maritime character of Bowmore that shines here. Sea weeds and sea breeze. Wet rocks. Mouth watering.
Oh, what a surprise! This Bowmore is very creamy and sweet on the palate with a truckload of vanilla and even some café latte. Nice! Very spicy as well. Think pepper and even some cinnamon. It has something candy-like. Sugar cane. A nice smokiness develops and that makes me happy. Sweet peat.
I would have loved for the finish to be a tad longer. At the death, it is a struggle between sweet and salt, the latter emerging victorious.
Somewhat sweet, but very nice and quaffable Bowmore. And water was absolutely unnecessary.
