Canadian?

@Wodha, I understand where you are coming from. I pretty much feel that all Canadian whiskeys taste like Canadian whiskey ... yes, even Wiser's 18 and FortyCreek. But when I am in the mood for something different, some of Canadians are quite appealing. At the risk of also being winey, Canadian Club Sherry Cask is one of my favorites. And more recently, I have come to really enjoy Crown Royal Black, which has a satisfying deeper flavor, with less of a Canadian character.

Of course, Old Pulteney and Laphroiag, very different from each other, are both very different from Canadian whiskey ... so with Canadian, you will have to be open to something a bit lighter, and quite different from Scotch. Let us know if you meet a Canadian you like :)

Historically, the Canadian whisky available in the US has been bottom shelf stuff, yet it sells slightly more volume in the US than does Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey combined (Distilled Spirits Council 2010 figures). Newer, better bottlings are now slowly trickling in to both markets.

WhistlePig Rye is a Canadian whisky bottled by Americans, and seems universally adored by folks otherwise sour on Canadian whisky. Caribou Crossing—another Canadian bottled by Americans (Buffalo Trace, to be exact)—is also enjoyed by many.

As for the Forty Creek you've tried, are you referring to the Barrel Select? There's a notable sherry influence to that one, having been matured in Kittling Ridge ex-sherry barrels. If you can get your mitts on it, however, you might want to try the new Confederation Oak Reserve before you pass on Forty Creek entirely. It's really quite excellent.

Any bona fide 100% or majority rye mashbill Canadian Whiskey is likely to be quite good.

I agree with AboutChoice, the Canadian Club Sherry Cask is really a great whisky for the price. It has that typical CC flavour but a nice sherry sweetness to it.

In the mood to taste some Canadian this evening. Wisers 18 is sumptuous, buttery, creamy, and cloyingly sweet .. but I am not at all complaining ! And side by side, there is Forty Creek Double Barrel, which is deep, toasted butterscotch with an Canadian essence. Both are on my Top Shelf; and they are both exceptional, but different ... Wisers 18 might be the ladies' drink, and Forty Creed Dbl Bar,the gents' drink ... but I am very glad that I have them both ! Runners-up are Canadian Club Sherry Cask and Crown Royal Black ! A very fun tasting ! What do you think ??

As a proud Canadian I must lend my support to dbk's suggestion re: Forty Creek Confederation Oak Reserve. It offers a wonderful divergence from single malts which I find appleaing from time to time. I think John Hall has done something very special with this Whisky and highly recommend it!

I surely wish I could try the Conferation, but after a quick review of the usual resources, it does not seem available in the States ... cannot even get the Double Barrel anymore :-(
